The leaves of the wild grapes growing on the fence looked infested but the bumps all became flower buds and then flowers. It happened to so many of the leaves that I just thought it is normal.

Now I cannot find anything on it.

they're nearly microscopic, the larva causes those bulbs to grow, and it lives in them and feeds off them.

crazy how some insects spin cocoons with their own silk, but these things had to find another way. no matter what, the poor plants get the short straw when it comes to insects

Topics like this are why I keep coming back to CE.

Never actually thought about what the inside of an insect gall actually looks like before.

The life cycle of the bug sounds fascinating but everyone loses focus and goes off on the grapes.

PLS link me to an article better than the Wikipedia article. It is not clear whether the cycles are physically different or just landed in a different place. Do these bugs really hatch and then mate?

that's how it works for most bugs. born as a fat grubby larva, then they pupate which might be what the brown pill shaped thing is in your pic, they basically get a shell and slowly change inside it, then hatch out of the shell as an adult.

then, sometimes they come out of the egg as a nymph, not a larva, and the nymph molts over time, slowly becoming an adult in increments, more like how reptiles shed their skin as they grow.

So I read a bit. Aphids and these phylloxera can retain the eggs and release hatchlings?

In viviparous parthenogenesis, the granddaughters of a female aphid (mother) are already developing within the daughter embryos of the mother.

I swear I read this in an NCBI article. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3900772/

and you never will; phylloxera is a class of aphid that borders on microscopic. you won't see daphnia or rotifers when you go swimming, but they're there.

Calm down. Post #16 has a pic I took. Do you suppose that the Vikings abandoned Vinland due to this animal?

what

Vikings came to North America, saw the grapes, called it Vinland and settled in for 500 years. They worked 400 farms.

Could the Sternorrhyncha be what drove the Vikings off and could the activity of the Vikings impacted the wild grape / the bugs?
