We all get stuck in the grind of whatever job you ended up at. But most of us just kinda ended up there. Does it really fulfil your purpose?

How do you take steps to get out of the grind and find your actual purpose?

I don't feel a need for a purpose. I've got a good circle of friends and a job that pays the bills and allows me to buy some toys now and then. Pretty content with life as is.

What do you enjoy? Are you referring to what you do as a job, or what you do as a hobby? Is your job personally fulfilling?

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

This sounds political tbh. I'm not worried about the system. I'm worried about finding something that I makes me want to wake up in the morning. Whether it helps the system or not idgaf, if it gives me personal satisfaction and purpose.

What do you do for work, if I may ask? Is it satisfying at all? Do you feel like you have to get through the day to get to hanging with the circle of friends and playing with your toys? Or are you happy doing what you're doing because it gets you those things? Do you ever yearn for something more?

Can I ask how long it took you to find what you loved? How many jobs you went through? How did you test these different jobs? What do you do now?

I found what I wanted to do when I was 27.

Before that I had loads of different jobs. Off the top of my head, Ive been a chef, publican, plasterer, bouncer, police officer, hospital admin, sports coach, recruitment consultant, tour guide. Probably loads of other things too that arent coming to mind right now. I tested them just by doing them. Simple as that, really.

Teaching is what I have ended up doing and I love it. Im currently teaching at an international school in Vietnam.

Are you based in the US? When you re-started each job, what was your housing situation? What was your risk at starting a new job as far as income and paying bills and whatnot?

This is wild to me

Im from the UK originally but moved to Vietnam last month.

As far as the financial implications of switching jobs go, it wasnt normally a massive deal because Id often be going into something that paid a similar amount. This is probably partly due to the fact that I wasnt in most of those roles for a particularly prolonged period of time, so hadnt really climbed the pay scale. I also went through stages where I was doing more than one thing at a time, which topped me up on the money front.

As far as housing goes, Ive lived independently since I was 16. Things were easier once I owned a home rather than renting because it was cheaper. I recently sold my house though.

Good for you! I wish I could find that. Have a really hard time wrapping my head around how I can find what I love when I'm already doing a full time job that leaves me mentally wrecked each week, and I can't just leave it due to income, etc

Were these jobs in the UK? It's scary in the US with rent/mortgage, health insurance, and security being lost with job changes. Maybe I'm just a wimp.

Yes, they were in the UK. Ive never been out of work for more than a couple of weeks so rent and mortgage never became massive problems. Health insurance isnt something you generally get from a job in the UK because most people dont feel the need to have it because of the NHS. The job Im doing now is the first one Ive ever had with health insurance.

I focus on my immediate environment and making things as unmiserable as possible but outside of that, don't really have or need one. I only want to fill my days with pleasurable things that enrich my life and make the next day easier while working as little as possible. Anything beyond that is hell.

A person's purpose is theirs to decide for themselves. They can decide what their life is for, or they can choose no purpose at all, it's up to them.

I take comfort in the fact that I know there is no individualized purpose in life for each person. Were all here through an incredibly complex set of extremely rare circumstances, and trying to assign meaning or purpose to that is simply ludicrous.

What gives me comfort is knowing just how lucky and rare it is to have intelligent life out there in the galaxy, and being fortunate enough to being one of those beings.

Instead, Im grateful for being alone, and focus on the beauty of this life and this world we live in. My only goal before I die is to make memorable experiences, form beautiful relationships with my loved ones, and see/experience as much of the world as I possibly can.

Trying to do anything else is a waste of time, IMO. Were not here forever, so wasting time feeling sorry for myself has zero place in my life.

I'm a butcher. Doesnt sound flashy, but its a skilled profession that I take pride in doing. It is satisfying but it isn't something I dreamed of doing, it just happened to be something I was good at and paid very well. Growing up I wanted to be a marine biologist, but I was pressured to go to school for EE/CS. Actually got my bachelors but was burned out and wasn't really feeling it.

Some days I find myself thinking "what if" but I don't have any real regrets.

To expand on this, I'm still looking and trying to figure out if I have what it takes to have a purpose. Or if I need to get comfortable with the fact that I won't have one.

Life has the meaning you give it. But you need to live for yourself. That doesn't mean you can't also live for others, it just means you're ultimately the one responsible for getting your ass out of bed every morning.
Me? I'm agnostic. I don't think life has any particular purpose or meaning, except for what we give it. I live my life to learn who I am, I want to help to my community, and live authentically. It helps I have a girlfriend who is a constant source of love, support (I'm an anxious mess), and intellectual and emotional stimulation. I don't know how much time we'll have with each other, but I try and savor every little moment.
