A year or so ago, I signed up for an email address on mailbox.org because I wanted to have a second address to sign up for some stuff. I actually paid a low amount for a year. I grew unhappy with the service because there was a huge lag in getting emails (a password reset for Discord took longer to get there than the window you have to put in the code) and the service seemed to go down a lot. I got a notice saying that I needed to pay up or lose the account, but it kept glitching out and wouldn't let me log in. Then the account was deactivated and made available to claim again. I tried to do that, but it says that the email is already taken (it's random and weird---who would want it?). I can't tell if it's still mine or if someone took it.

Any advice? It's connected to a Discord account I used to try out the service and a mailing list. That's all---never got around to do anything fancy. But I did at one point pay for the account and send my primary email address a test message. I haven't gotten any weird charges or strange emails, and I don't really know if anyone actually claimed the account (customer service can't give out information because they allegedly can't tell for privacy reasons that I ever owned the account).

I probably should have transferred my stuff off the account when I first became unhappy with it, but I assumed it was a temporary hiccup. Who would expect so many problems with e-mail in 2022?
