Ultimately, it's up to the courts to confirm whether or not the president can do this unilaterally.

Seems like a questionable strategy in so far as attempting to get votes.

Only if they do a huge overreach in the sense that they have no case or grounds to decide that.

Literally take away $10-20K from millions of Americans that were promised it. I dare you to see how that works out. If that doesn't cause huge civil uproar, I don't know what will.

There's no way to lose the long game.
Either everyone gets 10K lopped our loans and the republicans can claim it's unaccountable bureaucratic overreach, or we don't get 10K lopped off our loans and the republicans can claim that unaccountable bureaucratic overreach is what the democrats want.

The one real way around this is a house squeaker and 50%+VP senate vote codifying this into law. The legal argument against is a hell of a lot tougher then.

Yea any court involvement seems like a waste of time and resources.

Which is, to be fair, par for the course with conservatives.

That's how it's going to have to have to happen, to get it done before the midterms.
Unless, of course, this become the big deal for the midterms.

If the average Republican went to college, they wouldn't be Republican.

A number of conservatives have a certain machismo about not clinging too tightly to money, not accepting gifts, not looking for discounts, etc. (It's part of what makes it so easy for politicians to pull the wool over their eyes.) If a Republican can run the gauntlet of education and graduate with their conservative ideals intact, and if they can support themselves while paying off their loans, they'd probably take offense at the prospect of having it forgiven. They're proof that a person can live just fine and pay off their debts. Everyone else should be accountable too. As for the ones who didn't go to college, a great number of them would like to see us snooty graduates made to pay our debts in full.

Republicans won't lose many votes if they block student loan forgiveness. They danger they'd face would be in rallying nonvoters to get out and vote against them. I'd almost rather have that than loan forgiveness. You don't like the people who told you that you still owe $10,000? Stand an hour in line in November and vote them out of every office from the Oval on down.

Of all the unilateral things Biden has done I don't see why someone would choose to block this one.
