Compassion seems to be doled out only to the best-behaved among us.

People who see stuff like this and the people being treated well should be treated poorly instead of the people being treated poorly should be treated well are the problem

The minute an addicted person steps into the driver's seat of a car while under the influence of whatever they are struggling with all my capacity for empathy I might have had about their situation immediately dissipates.

this is what the article is talking about. the author lost ppl to a drunk driver also, it doesn't mean u can't have empathy and compassion.

I have empathy and compassion for the owner of the home that Anne Heche destroyed, and any possible motorists and pedestrians who could have been put in danger due to her selfish recklessness.

Anne Heche made the choice to drive under the influence. When she had a minor accident, she made the choice to flee the scene and continue driving. If you want to go down the "B-b-but mental illness" path, Anne Heche had borderline unlimited access to top-notch mental healthcare and made the choice to not utilize it.

A lot of people who make a show of how much empathy they lack for the deaths of people in situation like this are putting on a front partly because they feel that they should due to social pressure and partly because they are usually detached from the situation in all but the most tenuous of ways. It's just meaningless noise from a people who are conditioned to react to everything like they're reading a book or watching a movie until it actually comes close enough to home to make it hurt. During covid it was difficult for me to watch but I've mostly come to terms that it's rarely malice and usually closer to just childishness

If she had stopped after the first minor crash and accepted punishment, she'd be alive right now

It doesn't help that Anne Heche, while not an A-Lister, was considered more of a legacy Hollywood star than the dude from the vroom-vroom-car movies and the dude who to this day is best known for shoving a toy car up his rear.

The latter two should have been posthumously criticized for their own respective reasons. It has nothing to do with misogyny. Anne Heche made the choice to consume the subtance(s) she did. Anne Heche made the choice to drive while under the influence. Anne Heche made the choice to flee the scene of the original accident. Anne Heche made the choice to continue driving, putting countless motorists and pedestrians at risk. Anne Heche made the choice to drive her car into a complete strangers' home, destroying it in the process; possibly traumatizing anyone theoretically being inside of it at the time.

This isn't about misogyny. This is about an irrelevant, entitled addict believing they didnt "need help", refusing top-notch healthcare that many Americans would probably kill to have access to, and causing their own death (in addition to endangering the lives of others) because she just had to pound back some vodka before driving.
