This is irrefutable fact. They are a strange company. They will do stupid things like push all in on NFTs, games as a service, and AI learning - all things that I don't give a shit about as a video game enthusiast. Then they will punctuate that with smaller niche titles that look very interesting, like an indie RPG set in a witch's forest village, remasters of old games from the 90s and early 2000s, and their take on a Rune Factory game.

I was gonna ask if that's actually likely, if the souls fanbase would turn on the idea and play something else instead of buying the game but video game fans have no discipline, gacha and lootboxes speak enough to that. You are probably right.

Still, the idea of cheering for devs to water down their game's uniqueness for the lowest common denominator in pursuit of sales is a little stomach churning.

The upper management is run by "Bean Counters" instead of "Gamers" who care about the "Art of Gaming".

CoD is a casual FPS based more on spectacle.

It's like a yearly release of your favorite sports franchise.

Elden Ring was never targeting "Casual Gamers".

The vast majority of games don't get finished for various reasons.

Well deserved. Developers take note you can adhere to a vision and still see business success. Looking forward to DLC.

Not necessarily. I'm a huge gacha addict and Souls, Elden Ring, Bloodborne, etc. are top tier games for me, x.x

Somehow I'm not confident of this. The really resolute but smaller core fanbase sure but there's so much overlap now and it feels like a lot of people will go for anything that's popular enough. Even if it sucks, as long as it's popular.

Edit: And that other post you did about the game not targeting casuals. I don't know about that. It liked to show off George for the mainstream buzz, the game feels more spectacle oriented than the others, spirit ashes dumb the difficulty down and bosses seem designed around the idea you did indeed use them, the open world/exploration thing and all the talking bosses make it easy to feed to the journalists for a good score.

You are one of those that fall in the overlap category.

On a larger statistical basis, I don't see that many people who like Souls / Elden Ring / Bloodborne would be into Gatcha mechanics or Loot Boxes.

The only thing that remotely came close was Horizon Forbidden West. The hype fell off of that like a cliff. Nothing is touching Elden Ring this year.

Wtf. When is dlc coming out though? I got bored of the game after 200 hours

No it's one thing not to like it. Calling it garbage / saying it doesn't deserve its sales is another. You can dislike something but recognize that it's good. I hate Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem but I recognize that they are good for what they are.

We still have God of War: Ragnarok releasing this year, but I definitely see Elden Ring getting more GotY awards.
