I haven't built a PC in about 8 years, back then it was parts or bust. I feel like the industry has changed quite a bit since then though, and feel like you can get a decent gaming PC off the shelf...I mean, not Best Buy, but Newegg or something. Is that correct?

things were weird for a few years due to coin mining, and it was objectively better to buy pre-built

recently, covid supply chain problems and then the russian invasion have thrown things for another loop

unfortunately, if you care about money you should research and compare. i bought a pre-built off of amazon for roughly $1700 five years ago and it's still doing very well

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

My self built PC from back then crapped out when I started it again after not touching it for about 3 years.

My laptop from the same time I purchased it as the PC still runs as well as it used to and my son uses it now.

It is however a lot cheaper though.
