Just picked it up and I'm enjoying it but I'm pretty bad at it. Any pointers? Preferred characters? Money making?

Go through the advanced tutorial stuff. Pass a bunch. Make openings and don't move your characters out of formation too much. You don't have to charge all your shots.

I forget what they call it in the game but the shots where you shoot immediately after a pass are pretty OP.

My 10-year-old completely trounces me in this game so I'm not sure I can be of much help lol

Just remember that you can charge tackles if you need to use a smaller character to take down a big one, and you can knock the opponent's goalie down with a charged shot which can make for an easy follow-up goal

-Your strength stat needs to be within ~5 points of the opponent's in order to be able to knock them down with a quick tackle. If a character has more than 5 points in strength over another, they will not get knocked down from a quick tackle, and you must charge a tackle in order to take them out. Really useful to have for your Team Captain in particular to both stop as well as initiate quick tackles in order to gain control of the ball early.

-Every additional point put into speed will net you about +1 character distance in length if you have your character run from one side of the stadium to the other. So if you have one character with 11 speed and one with 10 speed, having them both run at the same time will make the character with 11 speed +1 character distance in length ahead of the other.

-The most important stats are Shot & Technique, as they help you net goals. More Shot also gives you an easier time to knock Boom Boom down/unconscious, giving you a window of opportunity to score a goal (a speed character as backup can help with this by receiving the ball after Boom Boom falls).

-Meanwhile, Technique helps with a variety of things such as making special shots easier, Hyper Strikes easier, and most importantly letting your ball curve much more and be more in your control. In particular, this helps you aim shots above Boom Boom's head from a distance, and curve it low up-close, as I found these types of shots to be the most effective to get past his defense from my experience.

-Lastly, Passing is usually seen as a dump stat that you can drop for the other stats using Gear. Passing does have its uses and increases ball speed when traveling between teammates, but you usually don't need a lot of it to get the job done. Balls can still be intercepted, especially with the chaotic nature of the game having items, so it's better to be a bit aggressive on offense as opposed to being passive on defense.

-Good characters are Mario/Rosalina (Shot+Technique), Waluigi (Strength+Speed), Peach (Speed+Technique), Bowser (Strength+Shot and big hitbox to block passes/shots), and Toad (Plenty of Speed for rushing the goal). No character is truly "bad" in this game though, and the game is balanced enough where you can pick any character and still have a good chance of winning.

-Also while I'm not completely sure of this, some tackles seem better than others, such as Waluigi's Spin Kick and Bowser's Whirling Fortress. Could just be placebo, but their high strength makes them valuable regardless. More importantly, the more strength you have over your opponent's, the longer they stay knocked down.

-You can use items when charging shots/Hyperstrikes. Just keep in mind if you use a Star, the invincibility wears off for the Hyperstrike, but will "charge" it instead. I think that means it's easier to pull off? Same thing happens when using a Mushroom, but I'm not quite sure what it means tbh. Either way, defending your Hyperstrike with a Shell or Bomb is great to stall any would-be attackers.

-And finally, even if a Hyperstrike is blocked by Boom Boom, you can still intercept the ball's rebound from his hands and score a net while he is stunned. As long as he doesn't straight up catch the ball, you're still in a good position to score, but you'll only get 1 Point instead of 2 if he manages to block the initial Hyperstrike.

EDIT: As far as money making goes, I'm not sure. Probably just play online a lot. You win a paltry amount of money from the cups and they take up a lot of time. Just be careful with what gear you buy for the characters you like is all I can really say in this regard.
