How privy are they to the mature content and themes? Specifically, if a child actor is casted to play an abused child, are they actually told what type of abuse they need to portray?

Because it seems pretty messed up to take a child and make them act as a victim of child abuse. It's like, you don't want kids watching this, but you're perfectly okay with casting child actors to reenact some of these deeply mature themes

The one that always comes to mind is that Chappelle's Show Sesame Street parody. I assume (hope?) that the shooting was carefully edited so that the child actors didn't actually see a diseased muppet dick, or have to listen to the actual lyrics, or were told what the VD muppets actually were.

And I know the kids in Monty Python Meaning of Life didn't sing "Every sperm is sacred" and someone else just dubbed the lyrics over them

from what I understand, a lot of acting is in parts, so the child actors (or actors in general) might not fully know what's going on in a scene if they don't have the proper context.

plus, there have been stories of child actors being too young to actually watch shows/movies in which they starred.

In Superbad, Fogel's actor was 17 and the redhead chick was like 23. So when they had to film the sex scene, his parents were off screen the entire time watching him fake-fuck this chick since they had to be there to supervise. That must've been so awkward lol

Even if they are aware, the process of shooting a show or movie and actually being on set is so much different from the final product that it really doesn't matter
