But its childish to have love be a thing you don't build on but somehow still expect it to weather all the tests of time

I'd say there's a subtle distinction between loving someone and being in love with someone. It's a little difficult to put into words, but... Loving someone is what you do with your heart and your mind. Being in love with someone is just something that you feel in your heart, your gut and your glands.

I feel like, it's one of those hopes/pieces of optimism that keep us going.

it might be childish to take it for granted and/or feel like you don't have to put in the effort to make things work, but I don't think it's the case if it's something you take seriously and treat with respect.
