Who owned no slaves, who could not run profitable enterprises while competing with slave labor. They nevertheless defended the antebellum social order with their lives.

And we live in a similar scenario today. Poor Republicans who lives in poverty but believes in the far right creeds such as the bootstrap logic and the "self-made" logic where they think that a person's destiny is largely self-made, and that if you have problems, you just need to "figure them out".
