The FBIs serving a search warrant on Donald Trumps residence is not in spite of everything being said about it unprecedented. The FBI serves search warrants on homes all the time. Donald Trump is a former president, not a mystical sacrosanct being.

If we really believe, as we say we believe, that this is a republic, that nobody is above the law, that the presidency is just a temporary executive-branch office rather than a quasi-royal entitlement, then there is nothing all that remarkable about the FBI serving a warrant on a house in Florida. I myself do not find it especially difficult to believe that there exists reasonable cause for such a warrant. And if the feds have got it wrong, that wouldnt be the first time. Those so-called conservatives who are publicly fantasizing about an FBI purge under the next Republican administration are engaged in a particularly stupid form of irresponsibility.

There are no fewer than five different congressional committees with FBI oversight powers. Im not especially inclined to take federal agencies and their officers at their word in almost any circumstance, and so active and vigorous oversight seems to me appropriate here, as in most other cases. But if it turns out, in the least surprising political development of the decade, that Donald Trump is a criminal, then he should be treated like any other criminal.
If that did indeed establish a precedent, it would be a good precedent.

The thing is that plenty of searches don't pan out to criminal charges. Probable cause is probable cause, and as people have observed, the warrant has yet to be made public and we do not have the affidavit in support of the request for a search warrant.

Moreover, the bottom line is even if nothing sticks, this is no different than what happened with Clinton back in October 2016. Or what happens on the reg to people suspected of criminal conduct.

Yes. They found a bunch of shit but nothing is disclosed yet. It's not likely it will ever be disclosed because they're secret documents. So we won't ever know anything other than what we already knew now.

Why would you expect the results to be immediately published for the public to see?

Best case scenario is he gets arrested, brings down a bunch of his cronies (roughly 90% of the Republican Party) with him, his supporters do something stupid that ends up in all of them getting arrested as well, and then the GOP is left so split that they can't hold any real power over the American people anymore

He is 100% for sure taking down everyone with him if he gets arrested.

It's already becoming increasingly obvious that his close staffers are selling him out behind-the-scenes. Dozens of them have already spoken with the DOJ.

I can't even begin to imagine the amount of paranoia going on with people like Jim Jordan, Mo Brooks, MTG (if she's even smart enough to realize it) and even Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity. They surely know that the DOJ has people testifying against them, but the documents probably weren't available.

None of them know what Trump actually had in Mar A Lago. And that's gotta be clawing away at them.

But what I find really fascinating is that Kevin McCarthy is playing along. Which to me suggests one of two things

1 - He's just stupid (which is commonly said about him.)
2 - He's afraid of having his actual views of 1/6 known to Trump supporters (and we already know he talked with Trump extensively, and behind-the-scenes was actually vehemently anti-Trump and even supportive of him being removed from office.)

The people close enough to get burned by all this are going to take the angle of how the revelations of these documents aren't important - what's important is that they were obtained unfairly / illegally.

It's also worth adding that several Fox anchors are in DEEP shit and Fox itself is not entirely sure what they said behind-the-scenes to Alex Jones and Trump's staffers. And now we have two separate troves of information that will likely expose some of it.

So Fox absolutely has a vested interest in downplaying the veracity of what is found and up-selling how "politically motivated" it was to obtain.

In addition, Fox is going to lose a fortune if the Jones Sandyhook texts involve Fox anchors (and apparently they do involve at least Tucker).

Not seeing it in as many places as I'd like, but sounds like Scott Perry is claiming FBI confiscated his phone now
