Couple that with our culture essentially mandating collectivism over individuality, and keeping to oneself, and it's even less likely you'll get the celebrity approach you'd find in, say, Taiwan or China.

I'm not a foreigner, but it's much harder nowadays apparently, so much so that some foreigners liken the shift to people here being as picky as in Western countries.

We're such a hotspot for tourism as far as East Asia is concerned that almost everyone's used to the foreigner look at this point.

You're about 20-30 years too late if that's what you're hoping for. Especially in the bigger cities.

I think I would be very surprised about how bigotry is more accepted today than it was then. I'd be surprised that US politics has literally devolved into 4chan posts.
