https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-05/amazon-s-irobot-deal-is-about-roomba-s-data-collection

Amazons 2017 deal for Whole Foods gave it insights into the grocery industry. The $3.5 billion deal announced for One Medical Ltd. last month provides a wealth of health-care data. Now iRobot can give Jeff Bezos & Co. a sense of whats in your home.

I legit stay in the late 00s/early 10s when it comes to a lot of tech specifically because I don't like any of this shit. I'd rather do manual work around my house rather than give unfettered wifi access of every facet of my fucking house to Skynet

It's bad enough that this is already somewhat true just because of phones/PCs but this is one of many bridges too far where companies want every fucking detail

Technically, they can do that with their Echo's (sus name). Wifi can be used to map a house like that Batman vision from The Dark Knight, which scared fucking Batman.

Its less concerning when you realize that the floor plans to your house are already a matter of public record.

I saw that headline on Bloomberg, but I haven't yet read it. I'm still kinda at a loss after learning about the invasiveness of tech startups like Ring and Nest not giving a fucking shit about your privacy/footage of your property. Figured I'd limit what I'd get angry/dismayed over today for now.

I know. None that stuff works on me though. Im a minimalist. So, actually the idea of them wasting their time kind of tickles my fancy. Also, funny enough, CE is the only place I go that has ads. Everything else I gave adless versions of. And I forget they're even here cause Im so use to overlooking them now.

I'm actually excited about this because iRobot has been dropping the ball on innovation and their Roombas suck compared to Chinese companies like RoboRock. I hope with Amazon, they can make better, more innovative, robots.

According to our new Roomba data, it's appears this guy has a TV stand, speakers, possibly a shelf full of LPs, some couches and two cats.

I guess that explains the records, blurays and cat litter boxes he's bought in the past. We've got him now though, we've go him now. Muwahahahaha.

No shit. I think anyone that gives it thought will realize that any acquisition by a company like Amazon is primarily about getting access to more data and information than anything else

"People tend to think of Amazon as an online seller company, but really Amazon is a surveillance company. That is the core of its business model, and that's what drives its monopoly power and profit," Evan Greer, director of the nonprofit digital rights organization Fight for the Future, told Wired. "Amazon wants to have its hands everywhere, and acquiring a company that's essentially built on mapping the inside of people's homes seems like a natural extension of the surveillance reach that Amazon already has."
Ron Knox, senior researcher and writer for the Institute of Local Self-Reliance a nonprofit dedicated to promoting small businesses and fighting corporate monopolies said in a series of tweets after the acquisition was announced that the $1.7 billion deal, the fourth largest acquisition in Amazon's portfolio, "may be the most dangerous, threatening acquisition in the company's history."
The acquisition, Knox told Insider, is uniquely dangerous for several reasons: First, Amazon will be acquiring an established market share, not a startup, which he said will cut off competition in a market that already isn't competitive and can further Amazon's market monopoly. Second, because of the massive amounts of data that comes with accessing iRobot's established data sets, Amazon can collect new information through the robots.
