Pre-64, what you were seeing was basically an extension of 1950's era music. And even then, the music from the second half of the 60's that most of us associate with it now wasn't always the most popular music back then at the time. The era in a sense has been kind of created after the fact by people looking back and trying to categorize it the way they want to. Anyway, I think the real time period of note is 1966-1976.
