60s had some good music, but I think the 80s were consistently better.

This tbh. I like a lot of music from the 60s but there was plenty of god awful shit too.

We just remember the Beatles, Hendrix, velvet underground etc etc while the terrible stuff faded into obscurity

Beatles, Hendrix, Velvet Underground, The Byrds, The Rolling Stones, Donovan, Peter, Paul and Mary, The Hollies, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, The Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, Bob Dylan...

You wouldn't want them on your roster?

I guess you could argue that it's consistent since there was so much less being made compared to any time after it so it's less diluted.

All great but the thing about looking at the past like this is you're already applying a filter. If we cherry pick the best acts out of any 10 year period we will find gems regardless of whether its the 20s, 90s or 2010s.

I know that argument. But what's the point, most music sucks?
I think the whole 'filter' argument is a bit weak.

The acts that rise to the top paint the era.

My main issue with this argument is that when people say the "1960's" here they're almost exclusively looking at music from 64/65 to the end of the decade. Pre-64, what you were seeing was basically an extension of 1950's era music. And even then, the music from the second half of the 60's that most of us associate with it now wasn't always the most popular music back then at the time. The era in a sense has been kind of created after the fact by people looking back and trying to categorize it the way they want to.

Anyway, I think the real time period of note is 1966-1976. Something like that. Goes beyond neat decade separation.

There's no such thing as a decade with consistently good music, lol. 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, there's a fair share of shit in all these despite us wanting to pretend otherwise.

I think the 60s were the best era for rock music. All the pop rock acts were great at the time, and many of them would devolve into cheesy arena rock in the 70s.

I'd say they had a slightly better peak with the likes of Dylan, Beatles, Doors, 60s Stones, but the 70s were almost just as good with more to my liking and more quality. Same with movies except 70s shits on every other decade there.

Still though, 60s/70s are the best 2 decades imo for music.
