It's mostly a watered down version of its source material, so it's probably the worst adaptation, but since the foundation is good, the movie still comes out kind of okay. Lots of subtle nods and fanservice so I feel like somebody behind that movie cared about it. Theres a whole manga for this series. Really, the ending with her background resolved is the best part of this movie. The movie combined all four adaptations so it wasnt done great but I respected the fact that it honored the source material. HOWEVER, this is a big budget Hollywood film for normies. Buu_88 08/06/22 9:53:13 AM #12:	That was fucking fantastic Now that I'm alot more familiar with the franchise I appreciated it a whole lot more It was like a mesh of the original animated movie, Stand Alone Complex and Arise (can't test to the manga since I haven't read it) and had little nods and easter eggs in it. I don't think ScarJo is a very good actor and she's quite wooden but in this case it captures the Major's personality perfectly. Not to mention the visuals and set pieces were phenomenal. Though I agree that Kusanagi's prosthetic body was always meant to be caucasian from the 1995 movie onwards I really don't want to get into that here. However the one gripe I do have is that her brain is meant to be of that of a 15 - 16 year old. Not sure why but that's just doesn't sit quite right with me But apart from that prolly one of my fav movies of all time - it just clicked with me I loved the Tekken effect as well where Aramaki was only speaking Japanese and everyone else was only speaking English but they still understood each other. That Netflix show with the horribad CGI was the final nail in the coffin on this notion. All the iterations since the film mostly ignored the themes and elements of what made the original anime so compelling because even though it had a couple amazing action sequences, it was first and foremost a plot-driven sci-fi noir like Blade Runner. Series as a whole like most long running anime deconstructed itself to just hot robot chick doing things to a degree "the Ghost in the Machine" premise kinda means jack shit now.
