I've been playing this game on and off for about a month now and finally finished it last night. I usually don't play games this way. Either I get fully invested in it or I drop it after a few hours if I find it boring. Omori was a special case in a long while because I heard people praising it left and right. Not to mention psychological horror is right up my alley and it has turn based RPG combat to boot. It sounded like my kind of game and needless to say I was excited.

Now there's gonna be heavy spoilers for a certain part of the game (especially the end) so I highly suggest you don't read the spoiler tagged stuff if you haven't played the game in its entirety.

I like the concept of the game. The real world, the dream world and the white space. Only problem is that 90% of the game takes place in the dream world which is filled with meaningless turn based RPG battles that quickly end up becoming very tedious (and this is coming from somebody who loves turn based RPGs). The quirky and weird humor which is clearly borrowed from Earthbound is a huge miss for me as well. Never liked those in Earthbound, never liked those even in Mother 3, but at least in those games they find a way to properly blend in the humor with the more serious themes of the game. Omori's dialogue in the dream world is just a chore to read through. It is neither funny nor does the forced Earthbound-like humor feel authentic. It feels forced to make the game all rainbows and sunshine about Sunny and his gang before the serious shit hits the fan and that is the problem with the game. The actual real world stuff is by far the most interesting part of the game because that is there where the main story lies and that is like only 10% of the game. It was intriguing to slowly uncover what actually caused Mari's death and the relationship she had with each person in their group. It was often times gut wrenching, often times heart warming but when the finale hit and the truth is uncovered, I was left asking myself Why?? How??? (not in a good way)

Sunny and Basil are like what 10? 11? 12 at the most? when not only did Sunny push his sister of the top of the stairs to her death but framed his sister's suicide by two lets say 11 year olds carrying her and hanging her on a tree. Like what the fuck man? I'm good with suspending my disbeliefs because I freaking watch Pro Wrestling but Jesus Christ, the main mystery of the game really dropped the ball on the reveal. The worst part is I don't empathize or feel sorry for the state Sunny is in at all (infact I thought killing himself for his gutless psychopathic actions would be a proper ending for the game) because he is a scum of the earth for not only killing his Sister by his inability to control his impulses (another example is Sunny stupidly jumping in the lake for Mari to save him) but to actually stage her death so he can avert the blame from himself.

So I know there are many theories all over the internet about Mari being a confrontational person and yada yada yada that led to Sunny pushing her to her death. It doesn't excuse what Sunny did. If you are having breakfast with your sister and an argument breaks out, you don't fucking accidentally stab her with the knife you are using to butter your bread and then take her outside with your best friend and hang her on the nearest tree. Call fucking Emergency or 911 and let them know. The lesson of Omori for me ended up being control your impulses and don't do stupid shit that are gonna have big repercussions in your life because your actions have consequences.

I didn't think an endgame reveal could possibly derail the entire story for me more than Danganronpa V3 did but congratulations to Omori for putting that claim to rest. It was tedious enough getting through the filler dream world sections to uncover the main plot but the end result ending up being one of the most triggering things I have experienced in a medium makes it easy for me to give this a score of 1. However I am gonna be fair and give it an additional point because I liked the real world relationship between Mari and Hero, Mari and Aubrey. The main characters have very believable issues and act and feel like how a person in that situation would. However Basil is a coward who did something stupid but Sunny is an outright unlikable unforgivable murdering piece of shit that I am ashamed to have played as for about 30 hours of my real life.
