I hate the term "Boomer Shooter" simply because the people playing FPS titles in the 90s were almost entirely Millennials and Gen X. But whatever.

Boomer Shooters are legitimately more fun to play. The pacing is better. The level design is almost always more open, varied, and rewarding of exploration. The guns were more fun to shoot and usually a lot more creative.

To me, Halo is the last "modern" FPS series to hold on to a lot of the Boomer Shooter conventions, especially regarding combat in which you don't die in two seconds (unless you're playing Halo 2 on Legendary in which case wtf jackals) and you feel reasonably stronger than the enemies you're fighting.

But something happened to FPS games during the Xbox 360 era... they became more "realistic" and frankly very scripted and brainless. And that's saying a lot since "brainless violence" is supposedly what defines Boomer Shooters.

Yes, they were too busy sequestering all the wealth for themselves while instituting policies explicitly designed to prevent future Generations from getting a foothold.

Modern FPS is so slow and lacks any fun technique to it

I wanna get Turbo Overkill and Ultrakill at some point because I enjoyed their demo's, but I don't do early access stuff. I hear Dusk is good but every time it goes on sale I never pull the trigger. You have any recs TC?

Exactly, and thinking back to games like Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena, it's clear that there was a path towards modernization for that style of first person shooter that was ultimately sidelined by games like Call of Duty.

Ion Fury was just too much like Duke 3D for its own good.

Prodeus is the best, IMO. Can't wait for it to finally be finished.

Amid Evil is not what I was expecting, but it's a bit more like Heretic and Hexen than Doom, which I'm totally cool with

Tbh other than Far Cry and COD there hasn't really been all that many pure FPS campaigns in the last generation.

The arcadey shooters are seeing a renaissance because indie devs can achieve them. I prefer campaigns like Halo, Wolfenstein and FEAR and there just ain't that many.

Well Call of Duty tried to go that way for 3 different titles and people bitched and demanded "boots on the ground" gameplay.

Unfortunately the majority of players enjoy the modern warfare military setting the most, when CoD tries to go back to World War 2 weapons/settings everyone complains.

But yeah I like the 90s shooters but I like Doom and Duke/Blood/Shadow Warrior a lot more than Quake and UT. I think that early polygonal graphics are inferior to sprites, N64 was almost a step back from SNES in that regard.

I lump Quake / Unreal / Half-Life / Turok / GoldenEye into what I call "late 90s shooters" and they are both thematically and mechanically different from Doom / Hexen / Rise of the Triad / etc.

I'd say Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior straddle the line between the two. But I do like how Quake and Unreal managed to perfect the multiplayer shooter with their sequels.

I'm not even sure if Descent has a defined genre. They're technically FPS titles in the loosest sense.

Ion Fury is literally just a post-Duke Nukem style shooter with pixel art and 2d rotating sprites and everything. I recommend it.

The thing I miss most about shooters are getting rewards for completing levels quickly and the amount of different cheats

Regenerating health, 2 weapons at a time just makes a lot of games feel the same

RtCW was a damn good transition between older and newer shooters. I still have it installed.

If you've never played BLOOD before it is my favorite FPS of that time and Steam runs the remaster on sale for $5 a lot.

It is made on the BUILD engine(same as Duke and SW) but it is inspired by 70s and 80s horror films.

I sorta put Half Life in a different category than even Quake etc because it is more like a survival horror game to me, but Half Life and the DLCs were my favorite games of that time.

They were way better and didn't have microtransactions.

Part of what made those games so much fun was that you were playing with your friends on the same room. Either through split screen or a LAN
