I can't quite put my finger on it, but the combination of the darker tone, older protagonists, apocalyptic semi-religious overtones and emphasis on the meaninglessness of warfare comes together in a way that makes it feel a lot less "positive" than the other Xenoblade games. Conversely, it feels thematically similar to Xenosaga and Xenogears.

Wasn't Xenoblade X pretty Xeno as well?

This pleases me greatly. I liked 1, loved X, skipped the shlock of 2.

I heard the opening cutscene is dark as fuck

Certainly if nothing else it is a massive thematic departure from the second game.

Yeah I'd say so. Xenoblade X was kind of weird in that it felt like they were going somewhere with that universe that they never actually went.

It did bring back some of the imagery of xenogears, though thematically I'd say it wasn't very similar. If anything, I'd say it reminded me of xenosaga. Xenoblade 3 seems a lot more firmly rooted in Xenogears.

There's a lot of thematic overlap between Xenogears and Xenosaga that was sort of left out of Xenoblade series, although I do recognize that Xenogears in particular leaned heavily into nihilism and that particular brand of Nietzsche. To that extent, I'd say Xenoblade 3 seems to tread further down that path.

Xenosaga, and all three previous Xenoblade games, generally had a theme of a fresh world or universe that might be a threat, but is also a world of opportunity. Xenogears and Xenoblade 3 feel bleak, hopeless, almost beyond a repair. Like you're some kind of glowing ember in a world that has essentially already burned down.

It was pretty shocking when the aliens showed up. Definitely more xeno.

That warfare more or less exists as an endless circle of harvesting life essence from each side so that more people can be cloned to fight more wars... Just so depressing and meaningless.

So far I'd have to say this seems like a pretty big step up from Xenoblade 2

I dunno so far, I don't think any Nopon will top Riki. His chat with Dunban on that beach on the Fallen Arm, his offer to Shulk on the Distant Fingertip to join his family so he can have a family to come home to, AND taking in Kino even though he already had lots of littlepons. Yeah, Riki is best Nopon. Riku is definitely a close 2nd though, with Tora and Tatsu being tied for distant last.

I like how Riku almost always looks like he's mad about something lol
