I got my U.S. license when I was 19, but barely drove in the States because it made me anxious. But Ive been driving for the last year or so on narrower roads with my International Drivers Permit. Got more driving experience here than in the U.S. at this point.

I also didn't get it for years for the same reason, it's incredible because it's so goddamn easy most of the time and people say I'm one of the best drivers they've seen and I have far less experience than most.

All I remember being 15 and going through driving school was the mean bitch that taught me and my friend Joe. She kept smacking us and I didn't take well to adults putting their hands on me. I let her get by with it though. Joe cussed her out once and she stopped.

Another thing I remember was having to beep when backing up and fucking no one ever does or has outside of those forklifts and municipal trucks.

I forgot some random document so they didnt let me take the test. Had every other piece of documentation they needed except one. Dammit. This country sure loves its bureaucracy! I guess expect this topic again in two weeks from now if I feel like posting it again

Sorry to hear about that. I had a similar things happen to me when I was getting my license. They had even given me unclear and wrong information. They are unfair and many people who work there are rude. Good luck!

I failed 6 times because I was so anxious.
Got high as fuck for the 7th one and passed like it was nothing.

I was convinced I failed my U.S. drivers test when I was 19, because I had literally only driven like three times for maybe an hour each to learn, but somehow I passed on the first try. And then only drove three times between 19 and 31. Now I drive daily on the left side of the road!

whereabouts are you now? I haven't driven in the US for like a decade, also have driving anxiety. Reason I want to move to Edinburgh (walkable, buses, trains throughout UK and Europe)

but I do want to be able to like drive to the Highlands and country so plan on getting an instructor to remind myself at some point

I've heard it's much more difficult to pass the UK driving test, stricter but I think also there's an agreement with the US to transfer licenses without a driving test (need to look into that, would still want to pay for a private instructor though since it's been so long)

Jesus. I couldn't imagine what my teenage years would have been like without a driver's license, much less my 20's.

I hate getting the runaround at the DMV. I remember when taking the test I specifically asked if I needed my birth certificate because I didn't have it, and they said no. Few minutes later when they're inputting information, that very same person asks for a birth certificate.

yeah, I enjoyed not having a car in the States for the most part. Walking and taking trains and riding my bike are still my preferred modes of transportation.

I remember they failed me on my first driving test for making too many turns on the parallel park. On the second one, I bumped one of the flags and they passed me. Apparently it's better to hit things than to take your time. Pure logic.

I didn't get my license till i 28. Always worked jobs where I could walk or had someone to give me a ride and I'd pay them. I was kinda scared of driving.

Used to have a 4 mile walk to work. I gave my grandad shit over it. I told him I never wanted to hear one of his I had to walk 5 miles to school stories at least at school you got yo sit.

During a period where I didnt have a bicycle, I also once had a 3.5 mile walk (one way) to work. Honestly, I loved it. Id get really stoned after (and maybe sometimes [always] during) work, put on my headphones, and have a fantastic time getting home. This was in California so it rarely rained and the weather was usually pretty nice. Even before I started using herbal supplements, I never minded having long walking or biking commutes to and from work. I truly enjoyed it. I feel like part of the magic of a long walk home at night or late afternoon is lost with the easiness of driving, but also the roads where Im living are not nearly as walkable. Plus, its humid and hot in the summer, cold and snowy in the winter, and my former herbal enjoyment is highly illegal and not worth seeking out here (not that its necessary for the enjoyment, but it certainly enhanced it in many ways). So driving does make more sense where Im currently at.

yeah pre pandemic I would walk 50 minutes to work. Could have taken a bus, but that would involve a transfer and the weather was nice (San Francisco) and I like walking. Also walked to work in Austin, there was a nice hike and bike trail, shaded, about 30 minutes.

Way back I use to always get off around 12 am a lot and have to walk home in California. Those were fun walks.

Yeah, I actually don't mind walking or biking on my commute. It's preferable in a lot of ways to public transportation (no dealing with erratic bus schedules or the people you'd see riding). The only thing about it that I dislike is extreme temperatures.
