Where would someone whose last Nintendo console was the N64 even start in this day and age?

Start with Super.
Don't play the OG version of 1 or 2

Any ways to play those that aren't illegal means?

IMO super metroid's movement is too stodgy. I'd play the GBA games, they feel much nicer to play. Maybe Zero Mission first, then Fusion.

Start with Zero Mission for sure. It's the shortest one and you'll get a good grasp of how the series works from it. After that then you can play Samus Returns or even skip to Super. Then Fusion and Dread

If you want to play the 3D Metroid games then you should definitely just play them in order.

Zero Mission is how I got into it: it points out what to do next, which is helpful to players who aren't well-acquainted with the series' logic.
But Super Metroid is also a pretty great entry-point. You just might struggle to figure out how to get into Maridia. And probably get lost in Maridia for a little while.

And I take it I'd need to hunt down a GameCube in order to play the FPS games? Those look really neat too.

The Prime series. Well, there's also the trilogy on Wii, but it's still basically shares most of its DNA with the rest of the series: it's more about exploration and platforming than fighting, just in first-person.
They do make good use of the more limited perspective though!

Unfortunately, there is no "easy" way to play all the Metroid games these days. On the Switch you have 1 and Super available through NSO, and of course there's Dread.

If you want to play as many Metroid games as possible, the best singular way is to hunt down a Wii U, as you can play most of them from there. (1, Super, Zero Mission, Fusion, and the MP Trilogy).

The Prime games are fantastic. Two of them are on the GameCube, and one is on the Wii. The Wii U has access to the Metroid Prime Trilogy.

it's not worth playing the original metroid game. I also wouldn't bother with metroid 2.

In any case, they've both been remade. I think metroid 2's official remake is kinda meh, but zero mission is a perfect remake of the original metroid game.

So just to round up what's been said in this topic so far, I basically need to get my hands on a Wii and a 3DS?

The main ones that are interesting to me are Super Metroid and the Prime games.

I dabbled in Super and briefly briefly played Metroid 2, and explored multimedia of the character Samus

Then I beat Metroid Prime, started Fusion, and beat Zero Mission

That's how I got into the series

Yeeeeears later I came back and now I really enjoy the original Metroid, Samus Returns, and can say I know what I'm doing in Super Metroid. So, I suggest that. Maybe watch a few videos and pick up Metroid Prime 1 with Dread or Fusion or Zero

I've only played the 2D ones. Not all of them though. Just Zero Mission, Super, Fusion, and Dread.

I like Super the most, but obviously Zero Mission makes sense to start with. It's also the easiest in my opinion, so it should be a nice way to ease yourself into the series.

I'm interested in trying Prime and AM2R at some point too.

Super is hard-hard

If you don't know what you're doing, you might need a guide almost every step of the way, and good luck memorizing the map IMO

I would actually recommend a WiiU if you don't want to get a Switch, since the Wii's online shop is already closed and you won't be able to get the older Metroid titles. The Wii U and 3DS shops will be closing early next year, with credit card support stopping this September. I consider the Wii U to be THE console for Metroid, barring the two new releases.

In short, the availability for each game is:
Metroid (NES): Wii U, 3DS, Switch
Metroid II: 3DS (Remake is also available and heavily recommended)
Super Metroid: Wii U, Switch
Metroid Fusion: Wii U
Metroid Zero Mission: Wii U
Metroid Prime Trilogy: Wii U
Metroid Prime Hunters & Pinball: Wii U
Metroid Other M: Wii U
Metroid Dread: Switch

There's also Federation Force on the 3DS, but it's a team shooter spin-off that doesn't star Samus, and there's probably no-one playing it online anymore.

Yep! I wish you luck finding a Wii U. It's a great investment for legacy gaming in general, and you can also play physical Wii games with it.

I've played and finished Symphony of the Night. It's a fun game and, admittedly, the only CV game I've played.

Interesting. If you maybe also have some background with Resident Evil? Idk

Super Metroid might be the game for you. Basically, just bomb everything to find hidden paths

Yeah, I've played the original game.

Metroid is one of those games I should have been a fan of. I like the sci-fi setting, aesthetic, power suits, intergalactic bounty hunters fighting space pirate and hostile alien creatures.
I should've been all over this shit lol

I didn't have the games on NES and SNES, and I didn't care much about Nintendo pass the N64.
Had there been a Metroid 64, things would have probably been different.

I like Fusion

like, it has its flaws. It's really more like an anti-thesis to Metroid games or Metroid "fused" with like Metal Gear or something. Linear. Lots of monologues.

As a GBA game, it experimented with basically trying to make the X-Parasites look 3D or holographic as opposed to just 2D sprite work. A natural extension of many of the ideas in Symphony of the Night, which you might appreciate. Fusion also does probably the most for explaining to the player how all the items work and whatnot. It's probably the best interpersonal story told with Samus as a talking character. And Dread is a sequel to it, bringing it together with ideas from Zero basically.

Good pair with Prime
