Scientists are reporting that damage sustained to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) during a micrometeoroid strike in late May 2022 may be worse than first thought.

I didn't read this article. I read about it back when they first mentioned it in I think June? It had already happened and they adjusted for it. The only real concern they had was whether or not this particular problem would be more frequent or not. They already anticipated micorometeorites. This one was just more damaging than the ones they planned for.

They expected it to encounter a micrometeorite a month, but one of the ones that hit it a while back caused more damage than their projections put out for a single micrometeorite

The extent of the lasting damage is vague, but it's not like it's broken

You could take triple the cost of the JWST and it wouldn't make a dent in student loan debt as a whole. It could help some people, but overall it's a drop in the bucket.

But how many mirrors does it need to give us better pics than Hubble?

Damn, that sucks. I just watched an episode of Nova about the painstaking preparations they had to do just to get everything perfect, from hundreds of points of failure that needed to be taken care of and the mirrors surviving Hurrican Harvey. Some scientists had been working on the project for decades, so you know you don't want any damage this early in its life (it's too far away for repairs).

You know, you don't have to choose between space advancement and helping people out with loans and such. You can find plenty of wastes before the space program should be a priority. We should be putting more money towards these sorts of projects, not less.

Ignorant is the only word that comes to mind when I see comments like that.

If that were a worry, it could most likely be fixed. Though without shuttles in service I admit I dont know how work like that is done anymore.
