That's because anime characters rarely look asian. Kuwabara legit looks like an American.

american characters in anime tend to look different than japanese characters. I remember seeing polls and stuff in the past that said asian people tend to see anime characters as japanese.

Kuwabara is like a straight off-the-shelf delinquent schoolboy design from that era. The only non-Japanese feature he has is red hair, and hair color doesn't count in anime. >__>

Yusuke and Kurama were whatever but Hiei looks the worst so far, though he would be the hardest one to get accurate I guess.

I rather they try even if its crap. People will always have the original. But yea, its next to impossible to bring anime to real life without it looking corny.

Honestly, Japanese tokusatsu is probably the closest anything has come to replicating the style and tone of most anime without it feeling awful (outside of outliers like Ruroni Kenshin which, funny enough, stars a toku alumni).

Granted, toku tends to be on a smaller scale and the lower budget is part of the charm, but I think a filmmaker that can earnestly capture that style could easily translate it to a live-action anime

Not all toku is the same though.

Like what you described isn't remotely true for something like Amazons or Kuuga

I don't know who's been saying toku isn't corny af. Modern Riders especially wear a fucking Bop-It around their waist with and both Sentai and Rider have nonsense catchphrases blaring out every time they transform. The cheese is part of the appeal, imo. >_>

Most Asian toku can get away with more serious storylines due to what's deemed appropriate/marketable to children, which has a side effect of being generally more palatable to older nerds. This year's Sentai had one of the rangers sacrifice a civilian as revenge for assaulting his wife. Power Rangers producers have admitted they can't do a straight adaptation of LuPat because "Power Rangers can't be thieves". (Also as recently as Dino Fury, they had to wrap up a character conflict in one episode because the execs don't want Rangers being mad at each other)
