I'm not sure Advent Children quite nails it as a sequel and all. Where do you imagine the story going? You got stuff like Dirge of Cerberus. If you consider the remake a sequel, etc. Crisis Core. Red XIII's tribe sort of gives a glimpse, as we get to see Midgar in the future at the end of the game, now overgrown with plantlife at the end of 7.

But yeah, Cloud is a complex character and I think if they wanted, they could even explore new stories within the framework of the same universe. If they pit him up against supernatural forces like the God Hand and some robot zombie plague along with it, with Shinra unlocking the Jenova cells Akira-style, and this destroyed a huge section of the city, where the monsters started in an explosion. There's a Cloud clone as the villain like Dark Cloud haha. Could make for an interesting experience. He's such a great character, I'd love to see him get an adventure of his own finally surpassing the shadow of Sephiroth on Cloud's world.

Imagine like an actual Vash character (maybe as a farmer haha) or a witch character like Schierke in FF7.

An alien enemy like Frieza/Cell/Buu or Lavos

So, the biggest downside to FF7 has always been some of the monster designs, imo, and the weapon designs. More than anything I think the game is lacking in that department.

So, when I imagine Cloud vs an army of DBZ style aliens, or Tetsuo/Akira zombies, or even in a world of Pokemon, or the Heartless , I wonder if it couldn't be better and more coherent than the past. With all the favorite Final Fantasy enemies too haha. But if you ran into like an evil Barney or a bunch of malicious Teletubbies, I don't think that's off the mark for the world of FF7. Some of the original monsters just look like random junk or stock cartoon villains haha. Imagine what you can get away with under such ambiguity. The series is famous for that.
