Blame the things back in the day that tried to eat it's ancestors that required it to evolve into having spikes.

I found this in my yard. Buffalobur. It's poisonous, but no animal is going to bother it. Even the leaves have thorns.

That sounds like a really bad idea.

Jokes aside, I have goat head stickers everywhere so I can relate and sympathize.

The stuff you really have to watch out for around here is stinging nettle. The entire plant is covered in hollow hairs that act like hypodermic needles and are filled with a nasty cocktail of histamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, formic acid, tartaric acid, and oxalic acid. Even the slightest touch will inject these chemicals and give you a painful rash.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/1/8/AAQwHjAADa7O.jpg
This is just a little baby plant, it can grow up to 2 meters in height.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/1/9/AAQwHjAADa7P.jpg

But if you're willing to try harvesting it, nettles are highly nutritious with up to 25% protein, carotenoids, vitamins B2, B5, C, E, and K, and a taste similar to spinach. Cooking, wilting or drying destroys the sting.

Goats will not eat the plant while it is fresh, but once it wilts or dries out they'll devour it.

I unwittingly walked through nettle to get a soccer ball as a kid. That shit hurts.

As a kid I was at camp and we were on a nature hike and our guide said, "This plant is stinging nettle. Don't touch it because it's painful." And some kid said, "This stuff?" and grabbed a handful. "OK... THIS plant over here is called dock. You'll often find it growing near nettles. This is the antidote for nettle sting."
