Between the red ring of death and its tendency to chainsaw discs to death at random, has there ever been a mainstream, popular console with a more terrible design?

Or it just happened whenever it felt like, according to research. From the Wikipedia article on "Xbox 360 technical problems:"

Prompted by consumer reaction to its February 2007 report, Kassa performed several tests with Xbox 360 units from consumers who claimed their Xbox had the problem. Kassa stabilized these consoles and positioned them at a location remote from contact by anyone. The results of the laboratory conditions test revealed that one of the nine tested Xbox 360 units had spontaneously scratched a disc after five hours of gaming. The consoles were also tested standing upright, and the test revealed that three of the nine tested Xbox 360s significantly scratched discs.

I had one that lasted me all through high school and started needing a trickstart at around 19.

Like, it wouldn't work unless I toggled the input on the video output.

Got one of the ones that looks like a One right at the end of the console cycle, that's still alive and I gave it to a buddy after getting my XSX.

I went through 5 total 360s, my last one, elite or whatever the one was with the bigger HD died a couple years ago and never bothered replacing it.

The failure rates were ridiculous, but getting repairs/replacements once the problem was known was pretty painless.

Yeah, that's something I will say in their favor. Even though we red ringed four times, we got it fixed for free every time--and the third time, they gave us a free controller (which was sixty bucks at the time) and the fourth time they sent us some Forza game for free as compensation for the repeated failures.

The original version of the PS2 broke constantly-- the laser would get stuck & not read disks. Every person I knew that had one ran into this error, many of us had it happen multiple times. There was even a class action lawsuit.

I didn't buy a 360 until they had pretty much worked the RRoD out, so I never had one of those errors. I did eventually get a different non-RRoD kind of error, which I never was able to figure out the cause of, but I could "fix" it by wrapping the console in towels.

Not in my experience. My cousin had his ps1 until ps2 came out, and he had that until ps3. I say cousin, but we lived close, so we spent as much time at each other's houses as we did our own.

Nothing will top 350, but I think theres a decent case for the NES somewhere high up the list. Due to the design for inserting cartridges, the connecting pins inside would eventually get bent, resulting in loss spending hundreds of hours taking the games out and making up home remedies like blowing into the carts in hopes of the game finally working.

Shit I only went through 3. I only paid for one of the replacements. Second one my brother gave me cause he decided to upgrade to a newer model. Once I got the model that looked like the Xbox one I was golden it still works

Never got red ring though. Disc reader went out on the first. I could still play my digital games though. Can't remember what happened to the second.

The pre-release Xbox One was shaking up to be shit before they backtracked all their terrible ideas.

That was a fun era of gaming tho. "Ps4 looks great" while MS was getting pissed that people were calling their console the Xbone and asking Amazon to remove polls that showed people overwhelmingly wanted PS4 over Xbone.

Though in fairness, I never played the hell out of them either. Not sure if playtime is an actual factor or not lol.

I think when Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 came out, I ran through 3 on those games alone I played online so much. Apparently the motherboard overheated and started to bow, playing 12-16 hours a day isn't giving it much time to cool down.

It's funny how MS customer service evolved from a 20 minute thing to get your console repaired, to literally a 2 minute conversation "My 360 is bro..." "Name, address, etc." and it was replaced.

It is. People just re-bought them all the time. I did it, my friends did it, most people with issues did it. Sony refused to fix them for free, what are you gonna do? It had too many exclusive games. Same with the disc holder on PS1. These are defnitely the most popular consoles to be pieces of shit hardware.
