So I know which ones to avoid and which ones to get. I've only played 1, 7, 10, and 15.

1) FFTactics

T > 5 > 3 > 10-2 > MQ > the rest > MMOs

6 > 7 > Tactics > 9 > 10 > 4 > 5 > 12 > FFTA > 8 > FFTA2 > didn't play > 13

Pretty much everything on the SNES and PS1 is a must play except 8.

Just avoid 2 and 8, don't play anything after 12, and you're good.

How's 3 and 5? I heard 4 and 6 we're among the best for the SNES era.

8 isn't that bad

I really like 3 but it's made strictly obsolete by 5. It's the introduction of the job system as we'd come to know it, and you can tell they hadn't quite ironed everything out yet. But points for creativity, I guess <_<

Get the DS/PSP version of FF3, if you can. The original is a bit rough.

IX and VI and VIII are my favorites.

Are the 3D remakes the best versions to get of 3 and 4 or should I get the more expensive pixel versions?

PSP FF4 is vastly superior to any other version.

This is how I rank the main numbered series. I havent beaten 12 or 15, and I havent played 11 or 14. If you like job classes and flexibility with them, then youre likely to rank FF5 much higher (the game seriously lacks in story, but the job system is very good for its time).

A-Tier
7 > 4 > 10 > 6 > 9

B-Tier
1 > 13

C-Tier
5 > 3 > 2

D-Tier
8

The 3 and 4 PC remakes are in 3D, so they are presented very differently. But the core game is still the same. Just a heads up that the FF4 3D remake is decently harder than the core game.

You should be fine with what you have with FF5 & FF6. The pixel remasters dont really add anything new.

I got it at launch in 1999. I actually still think disc 1 is solid, but it falls off a sharp cliff after that. My first 3 attempts at the game all ended at the same spot on disc 3 when you go to space due to boredom. I finally muscled my way through the game on a 4th playthrough, just so I could say I beat it finally.

It just isnt for me. If you wanna like it, thats fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. These sorta things shouldnt be take too seriously.

Pixel versions are good but not necessarily worth buying if you already own previous versions. (Though with 3 the main novelty is that the Pixel Remaster is the only 2D version of the game in English)

8 non-remastered is actually better than the remaster because it has Siren's uncensored lady-bits and a cheat to instantly stock up on a bunch of junction magic.

I played through the whole game for the first time a few months ago and while I did have fun, the game is not good, and I would not prioritize it over other titles. >_>

Tactics>6>9>14>4>10>12>7>10-2>5>3>1>13 trilogy>4 After Years>2>8

Thanks I think I'll just avoid 1 and 2 and pick up the games I don't have for my back log.

Id honestly recommend FF4 as a starting point. 1-3 are really basic by todays standards. If you find that you really enjoy the series after playing a few games, then you might wanna go back and try the earlier ones.

It's boring and tedious, with constant cries of "you're doing it wrong" when played exactly the way the game suggests.

Also it's incredibly obvious that the devteam ran out of ideas right after the "space" sequence.

I actually kind of feel the opposite. To me it felt like the dev team had too many ideas, and just kept throwing everything and the kitchen sink into the plot because it would make for a cool cutscene.

Like it's absolutely amazing how many different plot twists the game throws at you, and then literally none of them matter.

IMO, I hated the FF3 3D remake. I thought I didnt like the game until I played it again on the 2d pixel remaster and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Still not in the same class as ff4-9, but its a significant step above ff1 and ff2. Its weird cause I actually enjoy the ff4 3d remake

I'll have to try that because my experience with the ds remake was similarly shit

Does the FF3 pixel remaster clean up anything significant?
That last dungeon is a total bear on NES and DS/PSP.

Why isn't Tactics on PC? It's like the only FF game that's not lol.

Although we did recently get Chrono Cross which has been far deader for far longer, so hope is slightly rekindled

I know most people would rank Tactics a lot higher but I think the vaunted job system is one of the most overrated things in all of gaming.

9>10>6>4>7> everything else.

My personal ranking that nobody will agree with:

4 > 6 > 7 > 10 > 9 > 12 > 8 > 5 > 1 > 2 > 13 > 15 > 3

Didn't include sequels or online games.

I've played all numbers games except 11 and 2 is the only one I actively disliked.

That would be how I rank the main games. I've played a lot of spin offs as well. I'd put tactics and tactics a2, crisis core, and x2 as high tier, and most of the others as kind of forgettable that are coming to mind.

Threatrythm games are awesome but probably meaningless if you're not a big fan already. Plus it's a rhythm game so completely different style.

I feel like I'm missing another one that I've played but since I can't remember it, it's probably not worth mentioning.

To me, 4 and 9 are what pop into my head when I hear "Final Fantasy".

Now in spite of all of this, FF8 is actually my favorite game in the series on account of being fucking REALLY goddamn stupid and being unintentionally hilarious.

Out of the ones I've played -

Tactics > 9 > 6 > 7 > 10 > 4 > 5 > MQ > 8 > 12 > 3 > 1 > 13 > 2
