The Biden administration announced a $1 billion effort to rectify racist infrastructure decisions of the past, such as highways that were built by bulldozing Black communities.

The program, which the Department of Transportation is calling Reconnecting Communities, will in some cases tear down highways that were built with the expressed purpose of creating physical barriers between mostly Black and minority communities. Other projects will focus on building new infrastructure, like greenways to promote cycling and walking or transit programs, like rapid bus lines to reconnect communities to urban cores.

Ignore what? It was part of the infrastructure bill passed last year. Tearing down "racist highways" is going to turn some cities into unmanageable gridlocked nightmares for years, but new and repaired roads is both a good investment and a good, steady source of blue collar jobs.

An accidental benefit of this that highways will now tend to go around downtown instead of straight through it.
The beltways generally don't back up unless someone was an idiot and caused a wreck. It's the "main arteries" that are always an ordeal.

We've completely lost the very concept of any difference between "street" and "road" in 'Murrica.

Good. Most people are unaware of the racism inherent in the design of highways and other municipal projects.

Seems like a huge undertaking, hopefully they can come up with a good long term plan that isn't tossed out by the next administration

I mean, yea, eventually the new highways should be better than the current ones, but I've seen enough big city road projects (*cough* the big dig *cough*) to know those places are looking at 5-10 years minimum of ongoing construction just fucking everything up for everyone before they're finished.

This is all good. There's basically no reason you could oppose the funding of more transit-oriented infrastructure.
