In 1998, John Geddes Lawrence Jr., an older white man, was arrested along with Tyron Garner, a younger black man, at Lawrence's apartment in Harris County, Texas. Garner's former boyfriend had called the police, claiming that there was a man with a weapon in the apartment. Sheriff's deputies said they found the men engaging in sexual intercourse. Lawrence and Garner were charged with a misdemeanor under Texas' anti-sodomy law; both pleaded no contest and received a fine.

Reminder that technically sodomy doesn't just mean gay sex. It means any sex that can't result in pregnancy. I see a lot of people here and elsewhere thinking this just applies to gay people (who are no doubt most targeted, but still)

From the TX penal code:
In this chapter:
(1) "Deviate sexual intercourse" means:
(A) any contact between any part of the genitals of one person and the mouth or anus of another person; or
(B) the penetration of the genitals or the anus of another person with an object.

Unfortunately, all would be doomed to failure with the filibuster in place and the GOP all in lockstep to opposing everything the Dems bring to the table.

I dunno, I imagine if porn suddenly became illegal in 16 states there would be actual riots. Or they would have to make special vids with no oral or anal, and that would take a bit.

By the way, this stuff is exactly why when legal cases get decided there's never a movement to remove the struck down laws. Because then if the scotus reverses their decision, the old law instantly goes back into effect.

The idea that many or most of the people who hate gays are just closeted gay people. Not only is it untrue, but it implies that the biggest source of anti-gay oppression is themselves. It's not, it's fascist cishet people.

Like I said, please don't take this as attacking you. I'm just trying to clarify. I see a lot of gay people who are really annoyed by that myth.

I remember Republicans trying to sell lies for years about how "The GOP doesn't care about LGBT rights, we have nore important things to focus on and gay rights are settled", or the even more pathetic "Gay people should vote for Trump because he'll protect them from the groups that want to kill them." And if he's dead by the time the matter comes up and is replaced with Justice who's just as extreme if not moreso (likely, given how the GOP is now), then it's still a problem.

So if a CIS husband and barren wife have intercourse, that would count as sodomy in some states?
