Yankees in other words. Say some guys came from NYC, came down, and crossed path with some crew somewhere in Alabama proudly displaying the Rebel flag, and these crew knew these guys came from the North. Would they be treated with the same hostility? Or does it not matter now as it could have in the past, because they are white too in the end?

Which ones, yankees or carpet baggers?

It depends if they they were Protestant, Catholic or Jewish honestly.

Protestants were welcome

Catholics were tolerated

Jews were pushed into their own communities in big metro cities

Depends on how deep into the south you go. even back in the late aughts, my very suburban very white teacher told me a story about somehow getting stuck in Alabama during a road trip, and was threatened just for apparently looking liberal, or gay, or something. She didn't even respond from fear.

Let me remind you that Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation only freed the slaves of the Conferency. The Northern states that had slaves get to keep them as slaves
