No you just keep playing. Very few mistakes will end a run outright no matter how much of a bummer they are in the moment

Of course what Mzero said is valid too there's nothing wrong with restarting for really bad blunders because it's basically just like your lord dying.

oh, i didn't mean a level up, i meant losing your powerful units in a level/mission, lol. "fudged one mission up" is how you should read that. i'm sorry it wasn't clear to you!

i haven't played a whole lot of srpgs, maybe they're tuned to be incredibly easy and it's impossible to lose. do they give you replacement units if your squad dies?

FE (mostly) doesn't give you endless units, but each game has around 30 and you can only deploy about 10 at a time. So there are plenty of backups, and most new ones recruited later come at a high starting level.

Some SRPGs do give you endless generic units though.

I don't really care about losing the units in terms of gameplay. FE always has tons of replacements. I just don't want anyone to die in general. No man left behind.

I have only played Two FEs (POR and the DS remake of 1)

FOR THE MOST Part, I never lost a unit.....when I did though, EVERYTHING went south and I get game overs anyways, so ..in a weird way I was lucky? But I was willing to let them stay dead

I ended up losing like 5 units in the final battle of Shadow Dragon though. They got locked in a room with a bunch of dudes and IIRC they just kept spawning? I don't remember but I kept them dead. I guess that isn't much since it was the last battle anyways

QoL is the least important aspect of a videogame and I don't care at all about the abuse of them.
