I took a 3yr break from gaming in 2010-2013 things changed like a MF in that time

I call it the Viewtiful Joe test.
Every time I second guess whether I care for video games as an interest anymore, I play Viewtiful Joe, enjoy it a lot and go "Oh right. It's not me. New video games really have gone to shit, haven't they?"

I gave up getting excited about new games. I'm open to them, but good games are rare and companies are very good at fucking up games that work.

Sometimes new games can be bangers, tho.

This new TMNT beat-em-up. Cuphead. HuniePop. Indie games are great.

AAA are just dogshit now, almost no exceptions. Just blandio Marvel-style crap.

Street Fighter has 20 versions of each game.

You can tell these people never actually played the latest fighting games. A lot of them have new characters you can unlock via in-game currency you can earn just playing the game.

TCRF would disagree that older games were more "complete"

But yeah, everything having paid DLC is annoying

There were DLCs back then but they came in a form of hardware or rebranded new games. There's multiple re-released version of Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 3, Knuckles add on to the Sonic games, Fatal Fury Special was just an updated version of Fatal Fury 2, two versions of Final Fight one starring Guy or Cody. These are just the things that came off the top of my head. And then there are the Pokemon games where you had to buy link cables and different copies of the game, or have friends to trade with, to get everything.

So yeah, you were being screwed long ago

I don't get why the dynamic is always "games were complete then, come in dlc parts now".

Yes, that is definitely true for part of the market, but back in the day, you would get games with significant amounts of cut content just because they needed to meet the release date or appease the budget, never to see the light of day. That, or the SF2 example above.

Also: DLC isn't even always paid for. Hollow Knight, Blasphemous, Shovel Knight, Spiritfarer; these are just off my recently played list. Huge free content updates.

Didn't Shovel Knight swap things up after a while and raise the price for the whole package?
Edit: Because I know I saw it trying to sell me Shovel Of Hope standalone the other day.

I have DBFZ, Tekken 7, Jump Force you cannot unlock most characters offline you have to purchase them. DBFZ has 2 unlockable guys. Tekken has 1 and makes you buy old characters

I have no idea, this is the first I'm hearing of this Hope Shovel.

I ran it through Steam.
They're selling Shovel, Spectre, King and Showdown mode separately with the full game now named 'Shove Knight Treasure Trove' costing more.
Maybe I'm not looking very hard but I don't see Plague Knight. Maybe they wanted to leave it as an unlockable for beating Shovel's story.

I got Treasure Trove for Switch and it has everything, including Plague of Shadows

"Shovel of Hope" is just the subtitle they tacked on to the original Shovel Knight game after the others came out

Basically like how "Episode IV: A New Hope" was tacked on to Star Wars after release
