It isn't so much that he doesn't kill people as it is that he simply doesn't like killing people he doesn't have to kill (like people who are clearly beaten and can't fight back anymore), but if there's an imminent threat to either him or someone he loves, or if you just piss him off enough, then he's willing to kill if he feels like he absolutely has to. Also didn't he literally kill Ryuji because he wanted to give him one last good fight?
