Yeeep, TBIYTC was one of the earliest discoveries to make me appreciate vocal-led songs in VGM, and still serves as a great reference point. Also, did not expect Home Sweet Home to be this good wow

Another solid batch today! City of Tears is my favorite HK pick from this year's running, but it gets edged out by another cool discovery in a year full of cool discoveries. Takenobu Mitsuyoshi sings the word "Oh" and gets grounded. Today's exhibition:

nominated in VGMC12 (didn't make field); used in first guessing game

Back when I was going through recent OSTs to try to prepare a full nomination list for VGMC12, I listened through the Hollow Knight soundtrack and the two tracks to catch my ear on that first listenthrough were City of Tears and Queen's Gardens. The thing I love most about this track is the harp ostinato that initially defines itself around 1-2-5-- sus2-- that gives the track this constantly slightly unresolved, uncertain feel that it carries for nearly its entire duration. It makes the moments where the melody resolves itself a lot more rewarding. It really suits the track's mood, too-- emotionally ambivalent, hesitant, a bit sad all the way through.

other notes:
-when I played beyond good and evil for the first time I was really struck by the sound of Home Sweet Home when it played (the first area)-- it's a track I've loved since then, one I've always enjoyed revisiting, and probably my favourite from this game, which is why of course it makes sense that I'd nominate a completely different track in VGMC1 (Dancing with DomZ) and use yet another one (Hyllian Suite) in my first guessing game
-I always assume stg_travel_2_3 is Kaneda because of 0:34 but that's probably too hasty a conclusion; either way that part of the track is rad and the track as a whole is really cool and I'll talk about it more if it makes it to round 2, probably

This is the most 90s sounding falcom song possibly; even moreso than anything by yonemitsu maybe somehow lmao. But thats extremely a plus for me

Itd be interesting to trace my opinions on songs thatve been in regularly in vgmc over the years. This has gone from regularly last place or near-last-place ranked in earlier vgmcs, to...one of the tracks i look most forward to listening to! My taste has definitely changed substantially during all these years on here, but my reaction to this track is one of the biggest examples i can point to of that shift. (im still not voting for it tho because illusionary blue flowers is way too fucking good)

This track is also very pretty! It fits very well after home sweet home in the playlist to the point i almost didnt notice it was a new track

stg_travel_2_3 has some of the coolest most unusual chord changes ive ever heard in any song, and thats one of the most important elements of a composition to me so this (admittedly hyperbole) is saying something. Its astounding to me that i can feel that way about it while it still managed to be like melody_line-focused [normal battle] theme genre, which is a very popular vgm category that i have a very hard time getting into..but that is usually simply because the compositional traits happen to match up with what i seek less often in that category than in other categories. Here they 1000% do. i can always count on mitsuhiro kaneda to experience cool uncertainty(assuming this is him...even more than before im basically confident its his composition)

Illusionary Blue Flowers 8 added to faves. Actually a really beautiful and uplifting track. the chords are just so beautiful and warm and sunny. The little beeping/tapping sound in the background was annoying though. I also wish it had some more variety as it was pretty repetitive.

The Best Is Yet To Come 7.5 This song makes me kinda want to cry i dunno why. I don't even really like it that much. I guess my heart feels differently. The last minute was good in a tribal, worldly way.

Burning Hearts (Burning ANGEL) 6.5 The nostalgic 90s style anime opening seeps through with this one. Both the main hook and the verses of the vocals are nice, but the actual jazz instrumentation sounds out of place. It's also too cheesy lol.

Home Sweet Home 7 Focusing on the melodic path of the piano made it wholesome and carefree while also retaining a sense of beauty. I don't know if i liked the other instruments as much but they added some nice backdrops.

City of Tears 5.5 The violin in this is so emotionally charged and morose. Not much to say on the rest of the instrumentation.. i guess it's fine

stg_travel_2_3 3.5 Sounded like a megaman or 30xx track. But there really wasnt anything interesting here. I guess i like the part at :50 but that's about it. It stayed at the same intensity and energy like the whole way through.

Found a new song from Falcom I really enjoy, and it's this cool lava dungeon theme apparently. Really like the "vibrant synths here, they make me keep coming back for more.

I can respect the vocals for Best Is Yet To Come, but ultimately they don't move me in a way I was hoping they would with how powerful they sound. Decent sounding at best.

Takenobu Mitsuyoshi is a gift from heaven and his vocals are here to bless everyone. I really like the pure fun energy his voice and instruments give out, just pure goodness that only a few can deliver.

I was actually dreading this match, because I also really like Home Sweet Home. As repetitive as it can get in a couple of parts, just the vibes coming from the synths and piano and violin is SO addicting; I love the slightly empty yet adventurous atmosphere the sound creates here. Easily one of the best matchups this contest has given me, I'll take whatever wins here.

I don't know much about Hollow Knight, but I can dig the "light and dark" atmosphere I've always felt from it. Neat instruments, I think this could warm up a little more to me still.

Cool actiony chiptune song? Sign me the hell up. Very cool synths here, really reminds me of modern Kirby songs the more I think about it. Real good stuff.

MATCH 1

Illusionary Blue Flowers is really nice! It has that bright, adventurous sound, but with some sprinklings of something more wistful at parts like 0:06. The song is pretty good throughout, but my favorite part is 1:13-1:43.

The Best Is Yet to Come is decent, but nothing too special. Nothing new there.

MATCH 2

Burning Hearts is really cool! Cool instrumental with the iconic vocals of Takenobu Mitsuyoshi. The chorus at 1:16 is the best part.

Home Sweet Home has a really nice piano melody! I don't feel like it really goes anywhere though, unfortunately.

MATCH 3

City of Tears, like Home Sweet Home, has a soft, pretty melody that I like quite a bit. I don't really get the feeling if it not going anywhere that I did with Home Sweet Home, but it's also the case that there's better songs in that style than City of Tears. It's a good song though!

stg_travel_2_3 is decent. Not exactly my thing, but not a bad song to listen to at all.
