As in, a platoon of British soldiers comes to your house, and says, "This group of soldiers is going to live with you for a month, and there's nothing that you can do about it"

The British regarded the Americans as "our subjects," not as first-class citizens of the British Empire. Incidentally, the British did similar things to India, and India rebelled against the British, too
