despite the racial stereotype, i don't really see anything inherently racist about a fruit or any kind of food. if it's a specific dish, that's one thing, but it's just a fruit that grows in multiple parts of the world in various ways. it's really not that bad.

The museum has come out and said that they need to have better oversight on their vendors.

I doubt it was meant to be offensive, but there really isnt any kind of connection between that particular dish and black culture or history, despite it originating in Egypt. Everybody needs to be more aware of these kinds of things, especially the vendor in this case.

i don't see what the connection is though? Are they just not allowed to sell watermelon at all?

So cool history fact. Black Farmers after slavery were very successful in farming watermelons. Whites at the time started propaganda depicting black people as watermelon-eating lazy morons essentially to hurt them. Thus, a stereotype was born from it.

The connection is one of the ingredients being a 200 year old stereotype along with Juneteenth being plastered over it...

Why is watermelon racist? It's simply a popular fruit to eat during the summer.

Our food service provider uses the food and beverage menu to commemorate and raise awareness of holidays like Juneteenth. The team that made this selection included their staff members who based this choice of food on their own family traditions.

It's always something along the lines of "our black employees picked this out, so it can't be racist" but I feel like anyone who grew up in the U.S. regardless of race should understand the optics of something like this.

That said, I'm honestly pretty over the whole watermelon = racist thing. It has always been that way, but it has basically no modern context behind it
