Mind you I'm playing the director's cut of RE1 easy mode so this is without having to conserve ammo or run past zombies which would make the game even less fun to me. Even with the enjoyable puzzles I can't say I really like the game.

Meanwhile I like RE4 a lot. Should I move on to RE2, RE3, CVX, or just go straight to RE4 and later games?

you might like Resident Evil 2 Remake, since the camera is right behind you instead of it having tank controls.

The puzzles in RE1 really are good btw, it's like a point and click adventure game but intuitive

youre not going to get interesting puzzles out of the more action-orientated games in the series unfortunately (for the most part). it also depends on what specific aspects of the original you dont like. the backtracking? item management? more maze like level designs? the camera perspective? CVX is a lot of what youll probably hate if all of the above.

Id try REmake 2. Its not really action heavy that you might want, but its a good balance of the more classic style with more modern systems so you might find it more fun to actually play. If thats not action enough then try REmake 3 which goes further into that direction. The revelation games are alright and might scratch that itch you want, but they are more budget focused.

5 is basically 4 on steroids with forced coop and less imagination. can be a lot of fun with a partner, but the AI they put you with may make or break that game for you. 6 you might as well skip unless you find enjoyment in watching a trainwreck. 7 has more modern horror takes while combining a lot of aspects of the originals only being in first person. in doing so however it may not be your cup of a tea. 8 is similar, but goes heavily into the action route almost being a straight up copy of 4 in a lot of ways only in first person. You might actually like it if you dont mind the perspective change.

in general though most of the series eventually boils down to going into more heavier action (including the first one) assuming you dont stick to the higher difficulties. first few hours are tight on resources, then they always load you up for the second half. they all have that item management aspect though the series gets more linear overall as it went on.

The backtracking is only bad because of the load times, but the item management is AWFUL

If you have someone to play with (via online or couch co-op), RE5 is wonderful.

the item management is a core aspect of the entire series so i dont really know what to tell you there. 4 was the least obtrusive in the series, even the more newer more action focused ones go back to having more limited inventory. however because of the more linear designs it does mean less fiddling with the inventory's and less puzzle items you have to keep track of. as the series went on you also got more help in inventory expansions that you had to find or upgrade which helped in making it a little less annoying. the original RE and its REmake and 0 are the most unforgiving in that aspect. starting with 2 you had inventory expansion.

Play God Hand.
That makes this a little easier.
Watch videos of mercenaries mode for 5 and 6 for an idea of what they did with 4 as a basis. 5 is like 4 with more exploitable invuln frames more melee options for crowd control or safely killing enemies without spawning plagas, 6 is like 4 achieved ultra instinct but also reached the point of parody.
4 is the sweet spot where it's fun to just run laps of the campaign, upgrading and unlocking things. 5's got some great busted unlocks and really shines in co-op but mercs is where it's at. 6's campaign is a slog but when it occasionally lets you play it's nice. Mercs mode is more of what the game should have been, they let you pick a character and turn you loose.

7 and 8 are knee deep in walking simulator territory. Gameplay took a backseat to unskippable interjections, slow walking and moving objects around big time. The new character you play as is about as exciting as accidentally drinking expired milk.
2r and 3r look like 4 from a distance but combat is discouraged in favor of walking past things. More moving objects around too. You can watch 2, 3, 7 and 8 on Youtube and not really miss anything.

RE 5 is good, less good if you're using the AI, though... revelations and revelations 2 are good, and uhhhh that's it until the 4 remake and revelations 3 lol

RE2 Remake is god tier, modern third person over the shoulder gameplay, full 3D environment with little to no loading screens

RE3 Remake plays the same but is quite a bit shorter, it's still good IMO but try to get it on a deep discount

7 and 8 are similar but in first person and more horror based
