Like, yeah, it's good, fun to play, and high quality, but it's really not doing anything previous Fromsoft games haven't already done.

No. Elden Ring is much closer to what Souls games wanted to be.

Fully explorable map, etc

Yeah it's not too different from previous games but the previous games were fucking epic and legendary so yeah if you repeat what was already great then you're going to get similar or better results.

Yeh but it had been like 5 years since the last Dark Souls game and a lot of newer people finally had that type of game click for them, so its understandable that it would seem overhyped to those of us who knew it was gonna slay.

Also, horsey.

Open world and jumping.
I mean, Sekiro was way more jumpy than ER. As for the open world, it IS neat, but to quote Tim Rogers, an open world is a bookcase that holds levels. At its best, it may be a comfy bookcase that you want to hang around, but it's not going to make or break the game. In the case of ER, the open world makes the already-esoteric Fromsoft quests even harder to complete because a character could be anywhere on the enormous map.

If you ask me ER is super easier than the DS series because you're given so many fucking OP spells and weapons. People just choose to play dumb shit meteor katana and then struggle with it and then call the game hard.

I can't believe I bought into the hype.

It's my first souls game but everyone and their mother said HOLY SHIT BEST GAME EVER

It's alright. I gave it a good 80 hours but just got bored after a while. Open world is far emptier than I was led to believe with all the "secrets everywhere" noise people kept saying. Oh cool the hidden area after 5 mins of aimless wandering is a copypasta'd catacomb? Much wow!!

Games don't have to reinvent the wheel in order to be great. They refined and built upon what has worked for their games for over a decade now. More devs could learn a thing or two from them.

And maybe I just haven't run into them, but I've not found a copy/pasted catacomb or mine or whatever yet. They all use the same assets, but the layouts are different.

Actually, I liked the exploration aspect of ER the best. There isn't really an open world that's not empty. It's really about how well they connected what actually exists, and I think they did a decent job

But in actuality, Souls combat is now decades old and a bit bland. A lot of games came and went that did it much better, but we gotta be happy jumping exists now, like Mario ain't be doing that shit in the stone ages

It feels a bit like they've plateaued in terms of fair challenge in Souls combat and are now overtuning it by giving bosses absurdly long combos and delayed attacks for no real reason.

I almost wanna say Elden Ring has Souls combat there just as like a crutch. Like, if you can't get good, you can try to dodge block everything and peck or whatever. I found myself sneaking through most of the levels using the Sekiro elements brought over into Elden Ring. Critical do insane damage. I actually parried enemies here when they pissed me off. Incredible! For open world, magic and arrows do fine. Bosses get the Spirit Ashes. And that just about covers it. If you make an extreme build like bleed or mage or great weapon, I'm not sure it exactly plays like Souls. I felt more like I was jump attacking enemy heads than trying to get to there behind. If it didn't kill an enemy in like two seconds, it wasn't a viable tactic. Quickdraw shit. That's not Souls.

Or rather, its like Souls to such a specialized extreme with each gameplay element compartmentalized to one area of the game (open world, dungeon, boss) that it almost plays like a new game if you create a Jack of All Trades

Reminiscent of Bloodborne?

You take a game formula that people really like. In this case one of the most acclaimed formulas around.

Then you take it and successfully apply it to an open world game.

Is there a single time this has happened where it didn't lead to high praise and success?

I really don't think open worlds are anything more than a novelty at this point, and at worst they're a crutch for games devoid of content or design (see everything Ubisoft's released in the last 10 years). Nier Automata outright suffers from having an open world, for exmaple. Obviously, great open worlds can elevate great games, but unless the entire point of the game is the exploration of it (see Xenoblade X), I'm not really seeing a good reason to put open worlds on a pedestal.

it's easy. Firstly, it's a good game outright. Secondly, it is a "Demons Souls" style game, which the rabid blind fanboys always love, because i guess "hard" = "good", right?

It just seems like a well made game.
