I stopped believing when I realized that the human race could never be mass populated like we are now from just two people. Genetic bottlenecks would cause severe problems over time.

I haven't lost my faith. Quite the opposite, actually. We need Him more now than ever. Especially with all of the rampant shit that's going around now.

People, as a whole, are lost.

No Christians believe G-d created the world in 0 AD. Especially considering there's an entire 5 books of the Bible that take place before that.

I still believe in g-d, and actively pray. I went to Hebrew School and Temple all the time. Guess it just stuck.

I grew up in a super conservative Christian household in Louisiana; no friends outside the church or family. When I did try that, I was supervised and basically interrogated. Protection vs smothering. Totally unhealthy.

I wanted to be a minister when I was a teenager. That was the heyday of my faith. Then I quickly realize, perhaps by consequence (or at least contribution), that the whole thing was dumb and I stopped believing in it. I still study the Bible and Christianity for the sole purposes of debating other people on it, but that's as far as it goes.

Up until November of 2002 I went to church twice a week, for at least 4 hours each time.
I had several good friends and the pastors were some of the best people I've ever met. Truly wonderful people.
I was 10 years old in November of 2002 when my dad went to hospital. I saw him that night and I was there when the doctor said the words "won't make it to the morning."

I remember my mom waking me up in the darkest part of the night to tell me he had passed. I remember the pain, in the dark, my mom holding me and my sister.

If there is a God he can kiss my fucking ass.

When I was like 10

Around the same for me. I grew up in a family of mostly non-practicing Catholics and once I reached 4th or 5th grade I started realizing it was a bunch of shit. Then I ended up going to a Catholic middle school for 7th and 8th grade, which was actually pretty great except for the theology part.

never had any. I was raised to believe in god but it was really all about paranoia for me and as soon as I was old enough to have a naturally questioning mindset, the concept and nature of religion itself became clear to me and I decided I wanted nothing to do with it.

(This is going to involve Christianity)

I attended church as a youth, but eventually my family stopped attending as a regular excursion. I suppose you could describe our family as nondenomational at the time.

Once I became a teenager, I hadn't really thought about religion or God in any serious capacity for quite a while. At some point, I just realized "Hey, I don't really believe any of this." It wasn't so much an epiphany as it was me realizing something that was obvious to me for years. Acknowledging it, in a sense.

Inevitably I entered the "arrogant atheist" phase where I just completely shunned anything remotely religious as being dumb, asinine, etc. I would look down upon believers, etc.

Since then, I have matured quite a bit. I am still not religious, but I have come to appreciate that faith is extremely important to many people. Everyone needs some kind of core structure to their worldview, for many this is religion.

Nowadays I tend to look at religion in a phenomenological sense. I understand now that when people speak of God or Jesus, they are not just "fooling themselves" as I used to think. If a belief is strong enough, it becomes real to the observer. Hence someone can will a miracle into being, what doctors would call spontaneous remission or "placebo." Jesus, in this sense, becomes real to the person who believes because they believe, he becomes a phenomenological part of their life.

So when someone asks me "do you believe in God?"

I have to ask them to be very specific. I can say I believe in God as an experience.

In other words, they're fooling themselves. People swear to have supernatural encounters all the time. They're mistaken no matter how hard they insist it was real.
