So my situation, I have a job, its barely related to my degree in Accounting. Its not like I hate it, Im able to work from home and its pretty easy, but so far, Im not advancing my career. The job offers internal promotions, and they do have an accounting side, so I feel that if a job opens up there, I should be a shoo-in, maybe. On the other hand, there was a position filled only a few months ago that I couldnt apply to because I was too new (they didnt want people to be hired and immediately change roles). So I have no idea when a position will open.

Another thing, Im in the middle of some treatments, so Im actively using the insurance, so if I were to interview and get hired somewhere else, Im afraid it might run out and the timing would be bad to the point Id have no insurance. When I got this job, it took a bit for the insurance to kick in.

So theoretically, if I just wait, things should work out somehow, but Im also afraid Im gonna get further and further from the job I want to get, the longer I work here and dont actually do Accounting stuff. Im not even sure I wanna live in this area.

So, just wait? Wait until my treatments are done, then apply, or wait until an potential position opens that I can fill, and hope they choose me? Or should I be more proactive?

Insurance/general living should come first

Then focus on your career
Are you intending on doing exams like the ACCA

My original plan was hoping to get a base level job, and accrue some knowledge, and then if I felt like having an extra certification was worthwhile, do that. As it stands, Ive been doing so little, maybe I should look into getting one.

ACCAs are really hard from what I know like it's 3-4 years of study

Bump if anyone else has any ideas or advice. It does seem like I just need to wait things out, Im just at the point where I feel like Im way behind where I could be.

No comment on the accounting stuff but I agree with staying with your current job to make sure your insurance stays active. You don't want to get hit with medical debt.

I mean, it's very dependent on what these treatments are and how serious the condition they're treating is. Health should take precedence over anything. If it's serious you should absolutely not do anything in the short term to jeopardize that.

Past that, you should follow what you feel more inclined to do. You only get one life, don't waste it being hesitant towards goals you want to pursue just because you can find a reason not to. That shouldn't be carte blanche to be reckless, but there are almost always reasons to not do something. It's generally not a good idea to get pigeonholed into a situation of paralysis by analysis.

You could ask the manager in of the accounting side if he thinks new positions will open up soon. Maybe there's some older workers that are close to retirement.

How much are you getting paid?

Also for how long do you need these treatments?

That is a weakness of mine, fretting about what can be done more than actually doing it. I think this topic was partially a way of venting so I could be more serious.

This is probably a good idea. Im the type whos really afraid that asking the wrong question is going to get me in trouble somehow. But theres also no reason for them to fire me just for asking something like that, so maybe I should give it a go.

A bit under $16/hr. I should add that my rent is lower than it would normally be due to an agreement, and I live in a cheap area, so its not too bad in that respect. Not even close to what Id like.

I need to schedule two more appointments, and I have a follow up in about 3 months. The waiting list for some things are annoying, so who knows if those other appointments are over/under 3 months. This is probably another reason Im bothered, the unstable timetable.

Im back at work, so its as good a time as any to try to email the head of the accounting department. Not really sure what Id say. Hey Im interested if you ever have an opening? Im likely being too self-conscious, but it feels like desperation of sorts. But at the same time, its not like a single email should put me on a blacklist.
