I didn't really notice much TriStrat music while playing the game, but this song's very good! The buildup's cool, and I like how it delivers on that buildup so fast. Dolphin is also pretty chill in a good way.

Yusnaan's hella interesting with a lot going on. Some parts are pretty nice, but some don't sound as interesting to me. I like the bababa part of Dangerous a lot. I really enjoy the song for the first minute, until it breaks into actual lyrics, where it gets much worse (and sounds too much like A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton). It's still not bad, but it's a bit of a shame, and I'm tempted to vote it anyway.

Ah, the one bad song of the day, and it's not even bad for a Game Boy song! Has a pretty good melody, honestly. But it's no match for Catalepsy, one of the best MRD songs.

Triangle Strategy - Combat -Destiny-
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII - The Glittering City of Yusnaan
Mad Rat Dead - Emmental Catalepsy

MATCH 1

I'm enjoying Combat -Destiny- more than I did while going through the bracket! It gets better throughout the song, starting from 0:34 when the drums pick up, and then keeping at a steady peak from 1:03 and onwards when those strings come in. I think that's my favorite part of the song. It brings this heartfelt mood that I enjoy hearing in this song.

Healing Fusion is a great name for the genre because Atlantic Spotted Dolphin has this light and bright melody that could probably heal a bad day or something like that. This is a super tough match because I really like both songs! I think Combat -Destiny- is a bit more consistent with how much I like it throughout the song. Atlantic Spotted Dolphin has a slight ebb and flow, I'd say, with how much I like it as the song goes on. 0:11 is the best part of the song for me with those lush piano chords and the synth melody. It has a really nice, calming feeling to it. Like I said, tough match, and I wish I didn't have to vote against either of these songs.

MATCH 2

I wish I had the energy to have participated more in the Final Fantasy Music Contest when that was going on, but from the songs I did listen to from the contest, The Glittering City of Yusnaan was a big standout! Super cool rhythm with the percussion, and the other instruments that come in throughout the song bring a really interesting sound to it. My favorite part is when the saxophone comes in at 1:00. I really like how all the different chords it cycles through sounds.

I like It's Dangerous to Go Alone too! Like Atlantic Spotted Dolphin, it gives me this calming feeling. The chorus is the best part. Another match where I like both songs and would like to see both advance, but unlike the first match, this one is pretty easy to decide.

MATCH 3

Scroll Stage is pretty cool. I don't tend to be all that into older NES/GBC/etc. era chiptune stuff, but Alberto Jose Gonzalez has definitely put out some good stuff from those years, this song included. I like parts like 0:30 the most with how all of those channels work together.

Not much to say about Emmental Catalepsy except that I like it. Not as much as other Mad Rat Dead songs though.

Atlantic Spotted Dolphin
The Glittering City of Yusnaan
Emmental Catalepsy

I liked the beginning of Combat -Destiny-, but it falls off a bit once it becomes obvious it's an RPG battle theme. Feel like this is like one step away from being great. The string melody is very pretty but can't quite carry the song on it's own because it's also trying to be this driving battle theme, but the instruments doing the "driving" just have such boring parts. Atlantic Spotted Dolphin is pleasant with a nice Latin Jazz groove throughout. Nothing super noteworthy but a solid song through-and-through.

Yusnaan is very cool and is also varied in the ways in which it is cool. Love all the different instruments here. Great song. Don't really like the other song much. It does nail the feel-good vibe occasionally but too much of the song just doesn't seem to hit those notes for me.

Not much to say on match 3 but I like both.

re: The Glittering City of Yusnaan

day 2 support consideration

What a track. This is loaded with the kinds of things I love about Mitsuto Suzuki compositions-- a combination of 'real' and electronic instrumentation with an exotic feel and evoking a certain wide-eyed, shiny wonder. This feels 'big' and carries itself with some bombast, but it does so without feeling overblown-- it earns its grandeur. Things that don't feel like they'd be natural fits-- most notably the saxophone playing five-note sequences-- work perfectly, somehow. The way 2:20 hits is incredibly euphoric, one of my favourite musical moments in this contest. This has somehow trended up for me since nominations! I look forward to listening to this track every time.

(later note-- a a lot of this feels like it's in mixolydian b6, and it occurs to me that I like that feel very much; I wonder if this is a pattern)

8.2 - Triangle Strategy - Combat -Destiny-
6.2 - pop'n music 10 - Atlantic Spotted Dolphin
7.6 - Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII - The Glittering City of Yusnaan
6.2 - Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! - It's Dangerous to Go Alone
7.2 - Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (GBC) - Scroll Stage
9.5 - Mad Rat Dead - Emmental Catalepsy

Pretty solid day overall, but with very strong favourites for me in each match. And indeed, one of my nominations (and attempts in VGMC15 as well) is here at last! It's possibly my favourite song in MRD, I just love how it opens up after the starting part and the drive and emotion here are great, it's a pretty darn textbook "song for me". I hope i dont do that fun thing of "win almost every match and then lose the important one" here today lol, even if Scroll Stage is pretty good for my standards on GB music for the most part.

Atlantic / City / Stage

Combat -Destiny-: Desperation makes way for determination as the enemy reveals its second form, urging us forward to cheer on our team.

Atlantic Spotted Dolphin: Dive right into the sea, swimming alongside peppy ocean life as the current takes you for an exhilarating ride.

The Glittering City of Yusnaan: Teeming with life, energy and crowds, people seem to flow like ants in a marching line, but crowded ever closer.

It's Dangerous to Go Alone: Far away from home, a melody reminds you of the people and places you love and miss, tinged with nostalgia.

Scroll Stage: The dance floor beckons to you, as you feel transported back in time, another era filling your mind and getting you in the groove.

Emmental Catalepsy: In a frenzied rush, they scamper away in fear, but steadily grow bolder as they get further and further.

Combat -Destiny [7.3]
Atlantic Spotted Dolphin [8.8]

I feel like I should be enjoying Combat -Destiny- a lot more than I do right now, but it comes off as incredibly subdued to me. All the instruments are there for a nice energetic orchestral piece, but it never really goes into any interesting area for me personally so it ends up just being there for me. For now I can't see it as anything else but "passable".

HELLOOOO cool as hell jazz. This was a complete surprise discovery for me - or maybe it shouldn't be since I virtually have no idea what the variety is like for pop'n music. If songs like this are on there, though, I'll be more than happy to start snooping through the library for more cool songs like this one. I love the piano and synth work in this, they give me those chill yet upbeat late-80s/early-90s vibes I really enjoy. Let the dolphin swim through!

The Glittering City of Yusnaan [9.5]
It's Dangerous to Go Alone [8.5]

Big shoutouts to Andy and the Final Fantasy Music Contest he ran a while back, since that was where I found Yusnaan for the first time. The Middle-Eastern vibes are catchy as hell in this song, setting you up with that nice fast-paced drum section right at the beginning. The use of the sax here is certainly interesting and fits super well into the song, and the violin does a tremendous job carrying the main tune whenever it's necessary. This is easily one of my favorite FF song ever, and it's certainly getting my love for this match.

I really like the happy vibes that Dangerout to Go Alone gives me. I swear, it's almost like Smooth McGroove trying to cheer me up after a really terrible day while he whips out a keyboard and goes ham on that too. The synths here really work for me, and there's something magical with how everything gets soft and slow right at the end. Real neat song!

Scroll Stage [9]
Emmental Catalepsy [7.9]

Super solid chiptune by Alberto Gonzalez. I wasn't expecting my initial nomination of this to be completely sniped by CptBlooper, but who can blame 'em? This song jams hard with its catchy melody and its aggressive beats, and I can not help but head bop to this every time it plays.

Gotta admit, I had trouble remembering what this song was at first because it's not one of the defaults I'll instantly recall whenever MRD is mentioned. It could be that I've gotten so used to the harder dubstep songs from the soundtrack that this one feels much tamer to me by comparison. I don't think it's bad by any means, but it definitely feels a bit lacking in what I want and can remember from the usual MRD song.

Combat -Destiny-
It's Dangerous to Go Alone
Scroll Stage

Triangle Strategy - Combat -Destiny- 7 Oddly triumphant if not kinda generic. The quick piano bring this up a few notches on the epic scale. It reminded me of a frantic dance or chase or perhaps a battle against a giant weaponized mech boss

pop'n music 10 - Atlantic Spotted Dolphin 6 A fun and breezy soundfont. I like the cheery and authentic vibes this brings. It makes me feel like I'm in a bustling european town by the waves.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII - The Glittering City of Yusnaan 3 The pounding drums and like.? arabic sounding vocals give this a unique cultural vibe. I don't really connect with the worldly music much in general. The occasional guitar riffs are cool i suppose. But neither the overall rhythmic progression nor the old middle eastern instrumentation appeals to me.

Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! - It's Dangerous to Go Alone 9 One of my favorite songs ever. I fell in love with this after learning about it from last year's VGMC i believe. I just love the vocals. They're so uplifting and harmonize so well. The rhythm and bass in the background compliment it perfectly. The tension and release of this piece are also superb. This is done with the long Baaaahs holding and the next verses providing release with occasional pauses in the middle for additional tension. Even though it has quite a lot of repetitiveness, there is enough variation in the melody and parts that I could listen to this over and over without getting sick of it.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (GBC) - Scroll Stage 9 I never expected an old GB color game to have such banger music. The old game boy/color sound chip is a real diamond in the rough. It gets passed up a lot I think for the newer technology but this era captured something truly special. The way it used such bizarre sounds and boops to capture the bass and main chords is dear to my heart. There's something the song does around :28 that is so cool and can probably be described by music theory nerds,,, but whatever it is, it's so pleasing to hear.

Mad Rat Dead - Emmental Catalepsy 6.5 Wait what! I didn't know Mad rat dead music could sound this peaceful! This sounds more like something I'd hear from trails in the sky or some falcom ost. hahah. It's cool how it combines epic moving strings with the fast yet consistent beat of the percussion. I feel there was a hook or main emotional climax that was missing from this piece for me. I kept waiting for a big drop and it never came.
