As far as i can tell, this interpretation only pops around the 1950's, and one good standard rule about history is that the later an interpretation appears in relation to the event, the higher chance that it's fake. The song itself only appears around in print in early 19th century, and the lyrics had many variations For more info, i recommend the podcast "Our Fake History" a podcast dedicated to exposing historical myths and lies.
