Welcome to the totally necessary playthrough topic for the second Resident Evil light gun shooter on the Wii.

Just finished Umbrella Chronicles and RE5, so next up is Darkside Chronicles.

After like 2 and a half years, I'm finally going to learn who the fuck Krauser is and how he knew Leon before RE4.

Alright finally getting to start. Opening cutscene. UGH. Steve...

Kicking things off right away with Leon and Krauser. Krauser doesn't believe B.O.W.s exist? America nuked a major city cause of thousands of 'em.

This is already more of what I was hoping Umbrella Chronicles would be. Bit more of a story and game over an arcade shooter. Plus wow being able to change guns with the stick is a god send. Can also hang onto herbs for when you actually need them.

Boss was a bit of a bullet sponge, but this could be like Umbrella Chronicles where you are really meant to upgrade your shit as you go along. Some of the big fights in that game were a massive pain in the ass if you didn't upgrade and stock up on ammo for the better guns.

Didn't get much in yesterday, but hopefully I can get in a few solid hours today.

Oh we're jumping around here. Could be doing Leon & Krauser's mission as a framing device for the rest of the game or could just be going all over the place. I know REmake 2 is out and all, but it's still cool to see these upgraded graphics for a PS1 game.

Mr. X is pretty dope. Always liked him more than Nemesis.

Like how they're combining both scenarios together. Claire and Leon actually have some decent chemistry. Liked them bickering about Ada.

The Birkin fight was absolute ass. Emptied his health bar and was still stuck with him swinging at me. Shot the arm, the eye, his chest, face, idk what the fuck they wanted out of me, but eventually it just decided I did it and I won. Real shit fight.

Replayed a few easy levels to upgrade my handgun.

Switched to hard to try for more of a challenge and the gator **** killed me about 5 times. I'm fucking livid. These boss fights are absolute dog shit. Oh this boss is rushing at you? Nail him spot on with 5 shotgun shells and nope you still take the damage.

FUCK THIS!

This game's a piece of shit. There are so many times when taking damage is just completely unavoidable. Even if it ain't unavoidable, I cant fucking figure out the stupid tricks in time where you gotta hit the magic pixel in this dark ass game just right. Same problem with the end of the first Birkin fight. Terrible.

Finally beat him. Got shit score and shit gold. Fuck hard mode.

Steve was pretty good in Darkside chronicles. But I've always had a soft spot for steve.
Fun game But I was burnt out playing this after umbrella chronicles. I think umbrella chronicles was a better game.

I'm inclined to agree so far. Majority of the bosses there were pretty good and the action was more non stop. It was a pretty simple arcade game and while I do like this fitting in more story and cutscenes, the pacing can drag sometimes and moving around just doesn't feel quite as tight.

In UC you could also move the camera a bit with the stick which could help shoot enemies on the edges of the screen, but can't do that here. I do prefer the stick as a quick weapon selection, but yeah. Just not feeling as pure fun so far.

Gonna at the very least finish up the RE2 section before I call it quits for today.

I know this game covers Code Veronica, but I'm guessing that's the only other game. Then probably a deeper section with Leon & Krauser. A RE4 level or prelude would be cool. Just give me a barebones level of the opening town in 4 where you gotta barricade yourself in the house and Dr. Salvador comes running at ya.

I hated Darkside Chronicles because of the stupid dramatic sway they added, made it harder to land head shots. That wasn't in Umbrella Chronicles

It's also funny how they keep changing Annette. The Annette in this is different from both RE2's Annette and RE2 Remake's Annette in motivations and personality

I really struggle to remember much of this game beyond each story's final boss.
This game got me referring to Mr X as Trenchy and I've hard the hardest time remembering it's not his real name.

Mr. X wasn't a bad fight. It was better than the Ivans in Umbrella Chronicles.

Birkin looks dumb. Irons also had a weird alien sorta look to him rather than a giant melted flesh mutant.

Alright yeah now he looks like a skull face demon man. Much prefer the big mutated monster version.

Once again! WHERE THE FUCK DO YOU WANT ME TO SHOOT TO PREVENT THESE ATTACKS?! I'm hitting his eye. There's blood and green shit popping out to indicate that's doing it. I'm hitting the face/mouth. I'm hitting the hand he's swinging with. But I just gotta fucking eat these hits. Pure bullshit. Didn't die, but god damn that's some bullshit.

Also the shotgun's fucking useless in this game. It takes forever to reload and you can't even upgrade that. Can go higher capacity but I kinda don't even want to sink any of my gold into this piece of shit. Shotguns should be crowd control, big damage, problem solvers with a wide spread. This has shit stopping power, slow as hell rate of fire and it makes you pause for like 3 whole seconds to reload. And in some boss fights you just can't stand there for 3 seconds cause you'll get hit, Hopefully you unlock a better one.

Alright assuming the next level will be it. This is kind of dragging. Umbrella Chronicles was kind of ridiculous with the pace breezing through the games, but it was like a fun jaunt.

Other complaints about this game, the character looks away from the enemy far too often. Very annoying when an enemy is closing in on you. Also, some enemies are unkillable because they are there for a cinematic moment like Mr. X knocking them aside. Just wasted some rounds on a licker that should have been more than enough, but that one had to jump at the closing elevator doors, so I guess I couldn't have killed him anyway.

Another shitty boss fight. Final Birkin sucks ass. And all the problems in this piece of shit game are present. Unblockable hits despite me doing a 10th of his health in his wind up animation. Shakey cam making it very difficult to aim the rocket launcher. Some bullshit way to actually win since shooting a rocket launcher at him won't cut it. Slow ass reloads. This just blows.

Alright so the stun spot was his head, but only somtimes. Not the big glowing red spot over his heart. And there was no trick to the rocket launcher? You just need to fire at him faster? Bleh.

Least Leon told you straight up what to shoot on the train for the finale.

Liking the Javier missions. Krauser actually seems like a cool guy. At least for now. Any second he could be calling me bad names saying he's a sexual tyrannosaurus or talking about 5 o'clock.

Alright some revelations going on now.

The singing girl, Manuela is Javier's daughter. She's infected with the Veronica virus and Javier's trying to keep her safe, probably so he can weaponize her.

On to CVX. Stopping for now though. Glad I made some decent progress. Looking forward to seeing the Ashfords again. Curious if Chris will look like his PS2 model or if he'll be super buff. Plus we'll get to see good ol' Wesker.

And...Steve. But hey we'll get to see him die again! So we got that going for us.

Alfred's got a nice singing voice.

Crushed that level. First time I got all S ranks. Upgraded sub machine made a good difference. Plus I just went on a hot streak with headshots.

Oh no. They're playing the creepy incest fuck me eyes while I pull the wings off this bug video. It actually kinda looks like it's the original Dreamcast version and not a remake.

Yeah Alfred's voice is a good improvement.

No Bandersnatches, but we got Hunters.

I'm digging this Code Veronica section so far. Feels almost like more of a remake than the RE2 section. Also moving along at a good pace. Might help that the map in CV is pretty big with a variety of locations to visit. Beats being in the RPD and sewers for 3 hours.

Hey you weren't kidding. I never liked Steve, but was always a bit forgiving of him, but wasn't looking forward to more of goofy, klutz, whinny voiced brat sidekick Steve.

But they really seemed to have given him a makeover here. His voice is much better, he's more competent. He still shows his age and immaturity, but not in a way that is a direct hindrance to Claire. He's doing well for the situation he's in here.

I supposed the real test will be his big "Fatherrrr" moment.

The training course maze is a real cool addition. Adds to both this feeling like a training facility and Alfred's childishness.

Yup. Steve saving Claire from his dad was much better here. Maybe a little undersold honestly, but not cringe.

Took care of the tremor boss. Pretty easy one, but once again, unblockable hits. Not like there's a whole lot of more obvious places to shoot a big worm than the giant mouth and I was spraying machine gun fire in there like mad, but still getting hit. Good think I said "fuck it" to hard mode.

Ayyyy Wesker. Guess they keep it a mystery here. He doesn't show up and kick Claire's ass.

Cool. Carousel fight with "Alexia". They handled the reveal more tastefully here which is cool. Also think Alfred put on a nice performance with a little boss fight.

"The self destruct system has been activated." Gave me a shudder. Got a tinge of PTSD from replaying CVX so many times trying to get that trophy for a zero death, zero save playthrough.

Made it off the island. Tyrant fight was a bit of a bitch, but really suped up my handgun and that was far more effective than my shotty.

Going on 3am here so I am calling it a night here. Got some shit to do tomorrow, but hopefully I can fit in some more progress. Feel good with how much I actually got to play today.

Dreading Nosferatu and Alexia.

Long ass day, but I did sign up for another 3 months of game pass for a dollar, so there are some games on that I'm looking forward to playing. Hopefully I can make a little progress here tonight and finish off this run of Resident Evil games tomorrow.

Steve's getting on my nerves claiming how he did everything. "I took out the boss." Bitch I'm playing as Claire. At least say "we" and even that's being generous for you.

These levels are extremely long. Replaying for S ranks and all the files would be a real bitch.

Nosferatu fight was not only not bad, but it was actually much better than the real fight in CVX. Sure helped having a clearly distinct weak point to attack. None of this cryptic bullshit where ya gotta hit the hand, but only at this part of the wind up animation.

S ranked and got a ton of gold. Tons of destructible items in that level and going ape with the rapid fire big clip handgun makes it easier. Plus I use grenades for blowing up rooms more than I do enemies.

Oh damn. We skipped the entire Chris on Rockford Island. Makes sense now that I think about it. This game is like RE5 where it MUST have 2 players around at all times.

RIP Steve. He had a MUCH better showing in this version of the game.

Dang. This Alexia fucking murked Alfred. Ice cold.

Guess we're doing this now too. So they just straight up cut out all of Wesker. I thought we might get the big Wesker vs. Alexia foyer fight.

This Alexia is also much more jovial and childishly playful than the original. Matches Alfred, but I think I prefer the stoic version a bit more for contrast. Don't hate it though.

Hey they actually gave Alexander a bit of a post mortis redemption moment of sorts.

Woof. So so boss fight. I really did pick the best 2 guns to upgrade. Ignored everything but the handgun and machine gun and the bigger clips and rapid fire really paid off in the long run. A ton of those attacks would have been more annoying had I been working with anything else. I also switched up my strategy while looking for a boss' "sweet spot" for attacks. Instead of zeroing in, I just sort of zig zag or circle the area firing like crazy hoping to hit it and it really seems to work well.

Finally get to see some Wesker.

Guess that's all for Chris, Claire and Steve. Assuming the rest of this will be Leon and Krauser. Probably not much left. Might take a break here and come back to it. When I'm done, I'll have to look up if there are any bonus levels like there were in Umbrella Chronicles with Ada and Hunk.

Man Krauser really seeming like an actually chill cool dude so far. Figured he'd be a hard ass dirty solider doing war crimes for fun, but he's been really solid.

Big bro handshake by Leon and Krauser. This is absolutely making me like them fighting in RE4 more. Shame it took...4 years later to come out.

Boss from the first level. This boss blows. Can't figure out how to stop its projectile attacks. Don't hit the things he throws, don't shoot where they come from, don't shoot the head apparently. Just eating these stupid ass hits.

Unloaded all my best stuff into him thinking this would be the final boss. Now I'm out of rocket launcher ammo. Fuck it.

So that thing was Manuela's mother and Manuela's surviving by getting her organs replaced often and she got a grody arm. Things aren't looking so good for her.

Fucking stupid ass Javier. All these RE villains REALLY think it's the shit to turn into a giant monster. I think this is the biggest boss in the series. Size wise. Final Nemesis and Birkin were pretty huge, but this dude is as big as a mansion.

Hey no Krauser betrayal. He had to retire due to his injury. Same arm that turns into the giant plagas wing thing. That's surprising. Figured he'd either heel turn or "die" in some big way that he'd end up blaming Leon or turning crazy. Guess he just was forced into retirement and Wesker used him as a way to get back into combat?

Credits. Curious about the extra missions. Hope I don't have to S rank everything on hard to unlock a special level or anything. Hey did S rank that final boss.

"THE DOOR TO THE DARKSIDE HAS BEEN OPENED" What the fuck is this Kingdom Hearts Star Wars bullshit? Bonus chapterrrr. Is it gonna be Krauser & Wesker? Or maybe Krauser & Ada? Oh man could be that RE4 area I was hoping for.

Aw this is lammmme. Replay the same exact level you just finished. Only difference is this time you get to hear Krauser's inner monologue. What a weak reward. Also I'm sad Krauser was thinking evil thoughts during the big bro handshake.

Manuela's mom boss still sucked. Grenade launcher helped though. Also Manuela with the damn tentacle really feels like some fetish shit.

Gee Krauser sure is a negative nancy.

Yeah see, I like how Krauser gets an injury that would end his career, falls into a depression and all that. But 10 minutes after his injury he is thinking about taking over the entire world. Maybe he got infected with the virus? That started rotting his brain?

I'm not sitting through credits again.

Well I got some documents to read through, but that appears to be it as far as the missions go.

The Excella Uroboros boss might have been bigger than Javier. RE6 has a contender too.

I agree the monologue part in the final boss was over the top, perhaps even by RE4 standards. Inner monologues are like that though, all sorts of wacky thoughts getting airtime, irrespective of worth. Adrenaline to blame? Panic? I might have liked if they left it at him being maimed helping to destroy something that might have been able to cure that very injury, then living to regret it for a while until finding his way to Wesker but what can you do?
Even if they'd played it seriously I don't think I'd have let it put a dent in my image of Krauser. All-purpose cool action guy.

Okay, read through the files and extra stuff. The audio recordings were a pretty cool touch.

With that I'm officially done with Resident Evil for a while.

Enjoyed Darkside Chronicles, but was very annoyed with certain parts. The game looked nice and the presentation was a step up from Umbrella Chronicles, but there are pros and cons to the overall game. Weapon switching and saving herbs were pretty welcome changes. The camera bobbing was very annoying though and some of the boss fights really pissed me off. I liked the take down Umbrella story in UC, but I did also like Leon & Krauser's adventure. This game had better atmosphere but was less straight up fun per level than the more arcadey UC.

Really this is a bit of a toss up which is better. Each have pros and cons and might come down to what you value more. I think I'll give it to Darkside Chronicles by a hair.
