  • In clinical tests that they certify dogs with, the dogs have like an 87% success rate.
  • However, in field tests outside around cars, dogs have about a 50% success rate.
  • Most police departments dont track false positives because they know the dogs success rate would be abysmal.
  • The dogs are only there to give the police an excuse to search your car. The police dont really care if they work. Its just an excuse to give them probable cause.
  • Some handlers know how to always make sure the dog alerts near your car so the police can always go in. Since most departments dont track false positives, theres no way to identify this corruption.
  • The police can not just make you wait for a drug dog to come out (well they can, but its not legal.) The Officer must have some reasonable suspicion that drugs are involved before he can radio for a dog. He cant decide to just make you wait for a dog just for the hell of it. This is called an illegal second stop. This is where the officer has finished the reason he stopped you for, but then decides hes going to hold you while he pokes around for more things to cite you for. An example would be getting pulled over for speeding then sitting on the curb for 20 minutes waiting for a dog to show up. But police get away with this because most people dont know to challenge it in court.
The dogs are only there to give the cops an excuse to enter your car. They dont care if the dog is right or wrong. Its only a tool to get around your 4th amendment rights.

i like the video where the drug sniffing dog is locked onto a guy, only for him to pull out a comically large sausage from his pants.

The second stop stuff is always bypassed simply because an officer can claim that they smelled something. It's not really anything that can be proven/disproven unless the cop outright doesn't have a sense of smell or outright confesses. In practice, it's always going to be legal.

I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.

Most people don't know to assert it?

I'd say Rodriguez has been forced into lawyers heads incessantly for the last couple years. Now *every* stop that finds drugs is challenged as an unlawful extension. I suppose people could represent themselves and not know to bring this up, but is less and less likely when it comes to cases that "matter."

Isn't it true that in some jurisdictions they have laws that hurting the police dog is almost as severe a felony as if you attacked an officer? Completely insane when those things are literally trained to maul you.
