The blatant disregard for the pets would put me off too, because they're a part of her life and important to her, enough to give them a space, which they're now used / accustomed to which provides them with a lot of quality of life. She'd be putting her pets out of the way, for what sounds like abusive, controlling morons that at any time, based on their entitled attitude towards having that room over the living space, could just "lose" the pets. They've supposedly expressed their dislike of her lifestyle choices, and if the past is anything to go by, I wouldn't be surprised if they try to take charge again whilst living there.
