A drunk and possibly high and definitely underage driver decided to back up as fast as he could towards my store's parking lot. The exact point he hit was a column, he hit it hard enough that the column was knocked off it's foundation.

So right behind the pillar is the spot I work at. It was the office area. I was taking an order. The only thing blocking me from getting hit was some glass, a bit of metal, and a weak as fuck wall.

I have very little doubt that if he had gone the same speed and had not had the column blocking his way, it would have hit me.

I don't feel too great. Stressed as fuck. I just keep thinking 'I almost died'. A fucking column saved my life. Idk.

At a previous job, that happened to a coworker. She was cleaning the vending area and someone plowed right over the sidewalk, and into the building and hit her. She was hurt really badly but she survived.

It wasn't until after that happened that they installed those posts.

I felt the room shake and looked to my driver, in confusion, and asked 'did we just have an earthquake?'

It wasn't until the realization that he was just about 5 feet from where I was taking an order kicked in that the sorta...everything set in too.

I called the police, yeah.

The guy must have been underage, and he was definitely drunk or on something. It took a few minutes for the POs to arrive, and he didn't try and leave(probably knew he couldn't anyway). He mentioned it was his mom's car and he was apprehensive about giving his age. As well as failing the sobriety test(walking one foot in front of the other).

One thing that pissed me off was when he walked inside(to apologize, I assume). I said 'you know, if not for that column, you would have hit me.'

He said, in a drunken stupor, 'but imagine how I feel!'

I wanted to beat the shit out of him right there. I just had to walk away.

The store to the side of us has cameras, so I assume it was on film there. Plus there was an eyewitness or two. Guy is in custody.

Last year I was out on my porch and a drive-by shooting happened near me, and one of the bullets came within a few feet of the back of my head. I was shaking for days.

Really glad you didn't get hurt, just take it easy for a while.

holy fuck. Glad you're okay. It's easy to take being inside for granted like you're safe from shit like that, but one fucked up driver can just upend everything. This reminds me of a convenience store near me that was closed for the better part of a year after a drunk driver drove right into it. Thankfully no one was injured. Fuckin scary shit :(

People that do that kind of damage while drunk driving should be arrested and have their license suspended for at least 10 years

The thing about close encounters is, if you and everyone else make it out unscathed, it's just a great story to tell in your life. It only sucks when you don't make it. Try not to be stressed about it (I say this having had similar close calls).

(Also, now that you've had that happen your chances of something similar happening again are even less than before)

Thanks for all the pep talk everyone lol. I do feel much better about it now. For the first night I really didn't get much sleep but I feel like I'm back to a sense of normal, or at least close to it.

Agreed. The fact that people can get DUIs and just are allowed to keep driving is absurd.
