You should go to a gun enthusiest board and say that the two are the same. Then you can update the meme.

Target shooting is 100% of what I have them for. I haven't found any practical use for them for hunting. The long range AR cost me about 8k including the scope. The AR with the M4 barrel cost me about... 2k? I built them about 8 years ago so no idea what it costs now.

Ammo is the real limiting factor, .223 is hard to find at any reasonable price for awhile now so I haven't been able to go to the range or gravel pit as often as I want to.

dont see a point in banning them. they are good for nearly all gun applications and at this point about the best thing to have in modern terms of what the 2nd amendment was meant for. ideally it would be the M4 (or in the coming years the XM5), but right now the AR15 is the modern musket.

Lets also recognize that perception matters to these shooters. They gravitate to the militaristic looking weapons. Theyre not out there comparing magazine sizes. Theyre buying the army looking guns to match their body armor and camo. The look of the gun DOES matter.

If we start seeing the civilian XM5 in mass shootings, it's going to be way, way worse.

Anyway, the AR 15 is used in a lot of shootings because it's extremely popular. It's extremely popular because the gun crowd loves to say "I got the gun the army uses", even though it's a low-intermediate powered weapon.

the vast majority of shootings are from handguns (iirc 60% of them), while only 3% are done by "assault style" weapons

worth noting: the mini-14 is fucking awful for hunting (low bullet weight/energy, affected by wind, often fails to achieve a clean kill), and .223 ammo in general is not even legal to use for hunting everywhere as a result

so it begs the question of why someone needs to own that, too

i grew up hunting with a 30.06 bolt action. i never felt there was a point to semi-auto fire when hunting; i'm not getting another accurate shot off before the animal's reaction to shot #1 has put it out of my sights

in both cases, the semi-auto fire mode is still of zero value

and if you're not eating it, a shotgun is better and safer

10 states outlaw hunting with a .223. even less with a 5.56. so no its not illegal everywhere. the 5.56 is not ideal for medium game, but assuming you do your part a 5.56 77grain match round will kill anything. it can also be utilized for faster game and protection from animals like boars and wolves thanks to its faster fire rate and low recoil on top of general pest control of smaller animals.

in terms of the AR platform, they come in more than 223/556. the platform comes in over 70 calibers. my uncles goto deer rifle is an AR10 in 6.5 creed.

in general it should be up to the individual if they feel the need it. regardless this is all while talking about hunting. the AR can pull nearly any duty you want which is why its as popular as it is.

Coyotes and prairie dogs typically are found in wide-open fields. You wouldnt be able to get close enough with a shotgun, which is why they are usually shot from a distance using rifles. And if you can snapshoot a rabbit on the run with a rifle then you are one bad motherfucker. In any case, a rifle is overkill on a rabbit. Just one lead BB is usually enough to kill it. Rabbits are very fragile animals.

An AR 15 is just a semi automatic rifle. If you want to ban semi automatic rifles, fine, just say that. Saying you want to ban ARs just makes you sound like a dumbass that doesnt have a clue what theyre talking about.

The SIG SPEAR is not going to be any worse than basically any other modern semi-auto. The things it's designed for (Better long-range ballistics and armor penetration) are non-factors in a mass shooting, and the larger ammo size means less rounds per magazine and less rounds can be carried.

Most semi-auto rifles (in a reasonable cartridge) are basically already nearly maximally optimized for mass shooting. It doesn't matter which one you pick, really, unless it has a magazine restriction system.

i want to ban semi-automatic rifles (except from ownership by legally registered and licensed sport shooting ranges).

Dark_Spiret posted...
regardless this is all while talking about hunting.

i turned the subject to hunting because there are three understood legal uses for rifles. hunting, sport shooting, and home defense.

it should of course be legal to sport shoot with a semi-auto rifle, but unless you're at the range every day, it's likely not even economical to own your rifle. most indoor ranges will let you rent; some outdoor ranges will let you rent. if you had to rent to shoot, all ranges would stock up.

hunting necessitates ownership of the weapon. but semiauto fire is just not very useful for hunting.

home defense via firearm is a form of self-delusion.
