inb4Frankenstein'smonsternotFrankenstein.

Finally read this book and the monster is literally an incel. It's bizarre to read about how even 200 years ago men were facing such struggles in getting laid that Mary Shelley went out of her way to write a novel about it in a very short period of time. It must have been something that she had seen going on constantly as a woman in the 18th century.

In the book, the creature is a mass murderer who targets CHILDREN and FRAMES the main character's CHILD friend for a child murder. Like, he legit strangles some little boy and then sets up some little girl who is then EXECUTED for a murder he committed.

He explains (the creature is very eloquent) how he watched society from the outskirts of a hovel and grew to be enamored by the love a family shares, most particularly the love of a woman towards a man. Because the creature is so damn ugly though, people instantly hate and reject him despite his eloquence and only wanting to fit on.

The Creature doesn't try to better himself, or patiently explain himself. He LOSES his **** and starts burning buildings down. (This is like being a school shooter in the 18th century.) He blames his creator (his father) because he was born ugly, and he pines away at how he will never feel the love of a woman, so he's going to lash out at the world.

He blackmails Frankenstein into making him a wife. (in the book he doesn't make that stupid bride of Frankenstein woman, he does make another creature, but then brutally destroys it in front of the Incel-Creature and tells him to **** off.) At this point, the creature decides to up the ante and then KILLS his BEST FRIEND.

Frankenstein is an incel! He complains about women rejecting him and that he will be alone forever, and goes on murderous rampages through out the book as a result. He's also apparently super fast and agile because he can scale a mountain with his bare hands and no rock climbing shoes.

The creature doesn't even get killed at the end. Frankenstein dies, and the creature has some somber feeling like he did something wrong. Not sure what that message was all about, I was hoping he'd taste some justice at the end.

Most of Mary Shelley's family died before she wrote the book

Mary Shelley was concerned with the idea of whether she could bring her family back to life. If her family did return, how would the experience of being dead and forgotten affect their re-entry into society?

The book is about being rejected by society, and how that can affect people. Incel could be a part of that

Then most of the rest of her family died after she wrote the book.
And she lost her virginity on her mothers grave, apparently. Which is goth AF.

Anyway, Viktor describes The Creature as ugly, but its doubtful hes all that reliable a narrator, particularly where it relates to his creation. Also he was a shitty dad who left his creation to die, so its not surprising The Creature is upset about that.
Basically, they both destroy each other by being garbage people who cant forgive anything, everything sucks and you should feel bad about it, the end, 10/10 book.

Yeah, it's pretty clearly apparent that she had gone through some losses given how spot on the narrative is when Victor Frankenstein loses his mother to illness and gets the idea of resurrecting the dead.

Ironically, the monster Frankenstein is an incel, and the Doctor Frankenstein is a chad, holding super high esteem because of his massive intellect and family connections. He even has his adopted cousin back home pining for him but telling him she understands if he's found someone else since he has so many options.

Shelley was 20 when she published it. It's a remarkable work in every sense.

It's funny how little the verbiage from salty dudes has changed. Here's a review from the time:

"The writer of it is, we understand, a female; this is an aggravation of that which is the prevailing fault of the novel; but if our authoress can forget the gentleness of her sex, it is no reason why we should; and we shall therefore dismiss the novel without further comment".

No, he's just really ugly. Viktor isn't the only one to recoil in horror when they see him. Shelley didn't have the term, but he's just the uncanny valley turned up to eleven. Viktor chose the most attractive parts of the most attractive corpses, but when you give them false life, they don't fit together the right way.

How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form? His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great God! His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips.

That's not usually how the meme works. There's multiple ways to interpret the guy on the right.

The guy on the left is generally stating the misconception that the eponymous Frankenstein is the returned creature.

The guy in the middle is correcting the guy on the left.

The guy on the right OTOH can mean multiple things.

  1. The creature viewed himself as Frankenstein's son and would have responded to being called Frankenstein just like you would if addressed as Mr. (Last name)
  2. Viktor Frankenstein's horrific abandonment and abuse of the creature which drove him to murder makes Viktor a monster metaphorically.
