Proper motivation is not natural talent. Its just an ability to force yourself to do something.

Natural talent is a whole different story

Motivation is absolutely a talent. You can't actually choose to be motivated.

Ex's close friend had failed out of the Big Final Exam three times, and apparently once that happens, you are no longer allowed to be a doctor in the US. She was hysterical, and up until that point, I only ever saw her studying or coming out of a uni. Can y'all other doctors confirm if this is the case, the three strikes thing?
You can take it up to 6 times total, but after 3 times, you can't take anymore and have to wait 12 months.

Feels bad man. Those exams cost about $600 each and it's a bad mark on your record.

...I don't follow.

That's directly contradictory.

Doctors are humans just like everyone else and make mistakes.
People tend to forget about that, unfortunately. But when they think there is money to be made, they find a malpractice lawyer.

its not like being a pro athlete or an actor where you have to be born to do the job

There is no reason to think brains don't have the same limitations as the rest of the body. Not everyone is intellectually capable of doing every thought intensive job.

Gotcha, thanks.

That's still pretty harsh but I get it.

Explain how it takes natural talent to be a doctor because I dont see it

There's no such thing as natural talent, but some people do not have the capacity to learn the skills required to be a doctor.

The reason why it's a career killer to fail these exams is because the way the match system works is then can filter applicants just like how people filter on tinder There is a checkbox so that it filters out people who had failed a step exam. This means less interviews available and decreasing the rates for matching into a residency program.

Also failing step 1 (which is the hardest out of all 3 exams), especially 3 times, leads to delay in progressing to clinical rotations for 3rd and 4th year of medical school. Some even do not allow students to progress to their 3rd year until they have passed. A gap during med school is also a red flag.

Step 1, previously was a graded test, so if you do not do well and barely pass, it kills your career chances to match into a competitive specialty like orthopedics and dermatology. 230 was considered average when I applied. the new avg was 240, but recently they then made step 1 a Pass/fail only so now residency program directors have to look more holistically when choosing applicants.

It's super clear to me that the primary thing that segregates people in higher education is just having the motivation to put in the effort.

People hate physicians because they think we spend most of our time playing golf, which clearly is not true at all. We usually pick up extra shifts to try to pay off our loans, mortgage, save for college for children etc, or spend extra hours past our work hours in surgeries. They also do not understand, and will never ever understand what med students have to go through everyday and all the hoops to even get a residency position, so they can hate all they want.

This is the reason why nurse practitioner online programs are so popular now. You can take these online, and get a job easily at 100K a year. Then rise up with admin roles and make at least 150K+ just by doing nothing and barking orders at physicians.
