There was a whole scene where all the other heroes voted Jason to lead the expedition. In some versions Theseus is there too. All of the major characters from the Iliad were from preexisting regional folk tales, and the Iliad itself, apart from being a "historical" document, was probably told as a means of unifying the various Greek cities, by depicting their kings fighting alongside one another.
